Intego was my top internet security software for Macs in 2022.

Intego was able to detect and eliminate all Mac-specific malware I tested. Intego also offers many security features that are significantly better than Apple’s.

VirusBarrier — Malware Scanning

VirusBarrier by Intego is Intego’s malware scanner.

The dashboard has all the essential tools for virus protection, including an anti-virus scanner and a real-time protection tool, scan scheduling, malware removal and scan scheduling.

VirusBarrier will scan your entire Mac and any connected drives. This allows you check for malicious files hidden on your iPhone and iPad. VirusBarrier can scan email for viruses. Users will need to connect their email accounts via Apple’s Mail app.

My tests began with a Quick Scan. It took less than 2 minutes to scan over 200,000 files. The “Full Scans” were then performed. The Full Scan took less than 10 minutes and analysed more than 800,000+ files.

After I downloaded a few Mac malware samples, I ran another Full Scan. VirusBarrier detected nearly every threat on my computer, including trojans and adware, as well as other potentially dangerous files. I ran a series of ransomware scenarios to test VirusBarrier’s real-time malware engine. All simulated ransomware attempts were immediately stopped by the engine.

Intego allowed me to respond quickly to all threats. It also provided me with three options:

• Trust — Declares dangers as safe.
• Quarantine — Holds dangerous files in a secure vault.
• Repair — Clears infected files with viruses

After each scan was completed, I clicked Repair. While the majority of malware files were successfully repaired, I noticed that 6 potentially dangerous files had been marked as “Repair Failed” in the “Logs”. Since all files were quarantined, this is not a major issue. It would have been nice to know that the software failed to repair the problem so that I could make a decision sooner.

VirusBarrier offers a “Safe Browsing On”, which verifies if a browser has anti-phishing software. Although this feature is very useful, it’s not very practical. Intego could offer additional web security features. VirusBarrier’s Email Viral Scan option makes up for its lack of web security tools. And, I haven’t seen any other Mac antiviruses that offer an email scanning option.

Overall, I love VirusBarrier’s variety of scan options. The scans that follow are much quicker. I love the email virus scanner feature. It also allows you to scan for threats on iOS and connected drives. It would be much easier for VirusBarrier not to notify me about any issues with quarantined files. VirusBarrier provides Mac computers with top-level protection and is a great antivirus scanner.

NetBarrier — Mac Firewall

NetBarrier is Intego’s advanced firewall that offers additional options than the built-in firewall on Macs.

NetBarrier determines the network you use and adjusts your firewall security settings accordingly. My MacBook was protected from all threats associated with Wi-Fi hotspots. You can also manually alter your settings to Allow or Block outgoing connections.

NetBarrier is an excellent tool that warns users about background scripts and other apps trying to establish internet connections. You can also choose to allow or deny these connections. It was shocking to discover that so many apps tried to connect to the internet during my testing.

NetBarrier’s Applications tab provides a complete overview of all programs that are trying to connect to the internet. You can block, allow, or request that specific programs be allowed to connect to the internet before you make any connections.

Overall, I love the NetBarrier Firewall. Intego did an amazing job. It is easy to use, more functional than Apple’s firewall, and has features that prevent unwanted programs from connecting to your internet.

ContentBarrier — Parental Controls

ContentBarrier by Intego can be used as a parental control program. It is far more advanced than the Mac parental controls. It does more than block dangerous websites. ContentBarrier features include keystroke tracking and antipredator alarms. It can also capture screenshots and block inappropriate websites.

Monitor your children’s internet usage by viewing their chat rooms and email. You can also block whole websites such as those that contain gambling or adult content. You can also block a select few websites. Before allowing your child to access blocked websites, ask permission.

Parents can choose to receive regular emails with reports about their child’s Mac usage, such as the websites visited, email sent, received, and chat history.

I love the Anti-Predator Monitoring function in ContentBarrier. It alerts users when it detects potentially malicious phrases or words being used through chat rooms or messaging apps.

ContentBarrier can be complicated to set up. I was not given clear instructions and couldn’t understand the software’s functions. Although I was eventually able to understand the process, I think parental control should not be difficult. Some keystroke tracking features won’t work on older Macs which is very disappointing.

ContentBarrier’s many features are a significant improvement on the default Mac parental control system. Parents will appreciate the variety of options and regular activity reports.

Washing Machine — Mac System Optimizer

Washing Machine combines a variety of system organization tools and Mac cleaning tools in one app

Intego’s Washing Machine might not offer Mac speedup options like Avira’s Speedup for Mac, but I really love what Intego has to offer.

There are three options when you load the software:

• Reclaim
• Duplicates
• Organize

Reclaim

I ran a scan across my entire device to find files that were missing or deleted. Each Reclaimscan could be filtered to find particular junk files.

Initial scan took just five minutes. There were approximately 20 GB worth of junk files found. This includes logs caches and downloads.

After selecting the files that I wanted to delete from my Mac’s hard drive, I clicked Clean. The files were instantly deleted from my Mac.

Duplicates scan my Mac for duplicate files. It found over 900 duplicate files on Mac, sometimes six versions of the same file.

I was able to delete duplicates and clear some space from my hard drive. Duplicates has an exclusive feature that allows you see duplicate files before you delete them.

Organize is a great tool for cleaning up files and apps. I was able to organize my desktop files into folders and rearrange my apps in my Dock. Then, I created new “Smart Folders” folders — folders that are located on the left side of Mac’s Mac Finder.

Intego’s Washing Machine has Organise as its favorite feature. It was easy to quickly tidy up random desktop screenshots.

It was already well-organized so I didn’t feel the need to rearrange it. It can be useful if there are many uninstalled applications.

Washing Machine has many great features. While Reclaim and Duplicates are great, I prefer Organize. This feature is not available in Mac-based apps like Airo AV or MacKeeper. However, most Mac users love Washing Machine.

Personal Backup — Customizable Backups

Personal Backup is a tool for backing up files that are important. It functions in the same manner as Apple’s Time Machine. It’s personal, however.

Personal backup allowed me to back up specific files or folders to an external hard drive or to an integrated hard drive.

Personal Backup offers the unique ability of scheduling multiple backups. This is wonderful. I decided to back up my music files every week, and to have all my work-related documents backed up every hour.

Personal Backup also offers many other options, such as:

• Bootable Backup
• Synchronize
• Restore

Bootable Backup

With the current Mac OS X version, you can back up your entire Mac OS X installation. You can transfer all of the contents of your Mac to another Mac easily if your Mac crashes. This is amazing, because it takes only minutes for OS X updates and reinstallations.

Synchronize allows for file sync between multiple devices. Synchronize allows you to sync files between multiple devices.

This restore does exactly what it says: restores all backups to your external drive.

Personal Backup is far superior to Apple’s Time Machine, according to me. However, I have used Intego’s personal back-up and I now trust it. Personal Backup is the best Mac backup software, with its extra features like file synchronization and the ability to back up my entire Mac system (including OS X).
