CyberGhost’s parent firm has been criticised for having poor security practices in the recent past. CyberGhost’s security concerns are not based. CyberGhost adheres to a no logs policy that protects users’ data from hackers and other threats. It has maintained the highest standards for privacy and security.

CyberGhost VPN is a great VPN. CyberGhost will not work in countries such as Iran or China with strict internet restrictions. CyberGhost VPN’s advertising blocking feature is also in need for improvement. It failed to block ads from numerous websites in my tests.

CyberGhost VPN is great. It is simple to use, provides tons of functionality and can be used with almost all streaming services.

CyberGhost VPN Features

CyberGhost VPN has all the security features you would expect from premium VPNs.

• AES encryption of 256 bits is often called “military quality” encryption.
• Kill switch — Cuts internet connection in case of lost VPN connection
• No logs — does NOT record browsing or connection information.

CyberGhost lets users connect to seven devices at once, which is more than top competitors TunnelBear (which only allows 5 devices) and ExpressVPN (5 devices). Private Internet Access (10 devices), ProtonVPN(10), VyprVPN (30), or IPVanish (10 simultaneous) are options for you if you have more devices.

CyberGhost VPN supports OpenVPN and IKEv2 VPN protocols, as well as WireGuard. Some protocols are not compatible with certain apps. OpenVPN or IKEv2 is not available for Android. Tunnelblick is a third party application that allows OpenVPN to be added to macOS. This can prove difficult for non-technical users.

CyberGhost VPN has built-in protection from DNS, WebRTC, and IPv4 leaks. CyberGhost does NOT support IPv6. Therefore, traffic using this protocol will be vulnerable to leaks.

Split-tunneling

App Split tunnelling, also known as App Split Tunnel, is available on the Android version of CyberGhost VPN. This feature allows you control which apps are routed through the VPN. It worked as expected. CyberGhost’s split-tunneling feature was perfect. It worked well with both VPN-connected as well as normal internet apps.

CyberGhost VPN’s Android split-tunneling feature is very similar to ExpressVPN. This also allows you not to allow apps. ProtonVPN split tunneling is more convenient for me. It lets you exclude apps and IP addresses. It allows you access to the IP address of any website. This will enable you exclude them from the VPN tunnel.

CyberGhost VPN is not able to offer split-tunneling. However, CyberGhost VPN has a section called “Smart Rules” that includes an exceptions tool that allows users to choose which websites they do not wish to have routed through the VPN. This feature was tried by me. I was able to see a much faster connection when watching Netflix content after I had removed Netflix from my test network.

CyberGhost VPN’s split-tuning feature for Android lets you route certain apps through the local network. CyberGhost VPN would be great if it had a fully-featured Split Tunneling tool for Windows.

Smart Rules

CyberGhost’s Smart Rules function, which is only available for Mac and Windows, allows users to personalize their VPN preferences. CyberGhost’s settings can be changed easily. You only need to toggle a switch to activate or deactivate a function. There are four kinds of Smart Rules. They offer different options for setting up security and privacy functions.

• CyberGhost launch guidelines. CyberGhost can be connected to and you can choose to open a particular app (e.g. Email or social media will open automatically after you connect to CyberGhost.
• Wi-Fi protection. CyberGhost VPN lets users choose to launch the VPN connection when they connect to a Wi Fi network that is secured, unsecure, and/or saved.
• Limitations. To make an exception, you’ll need OpenVPN.
• App rules. CyberGhost can automatically connect to a server every time you open an app.

There are many VPNs that let you disable/enable functions manually. However, CyberGhost’s smart rules offer more control than any other VPN.

NoSpy servers

CyberGhost’s noSpy servers offer greater security and speed than CyberGhost’s regular servers.

CyberGhost states that NoSpy servers use premium hardware and are linked with a dedicated link. This makes them faster than other servers. These NoSpy servers offer a high bandwidth, which makes them ideal for large file uploads as well as downloads.

CyberGhost VPN headquarters in Romania is home to NoSpy. CyberGhost set up the servers and CyberGhost staff manage them. These servers are less vulnerable to attack that remote servers.

NoSpy servers of CyberGhost VPN offer additional security and are optimized to speed. CyberGhost VPN NoSpy servers performed faster than I experienced when connecting via CyberGhost torrenting, streaming servers or other methods.

Overall, CyberGhost VPN’s NoSpy servers are a great bonus to yearly payments plans.

My ID Guard

CyberGhost’s My ID Guard will alert you if your passwords or email address have been compromised. It allows you to access your compromised credentials to protect online accounts and modify them. The basic password generator can be used to create stronger passwords. CyberGhost has dark web monitoring built in, which I like, but there are better options to protect your passwords online. Dashlane offers a password security dashboard as well as live dark Web monitoring (with Dashlane agents monitoring the dark web in real-time), as well as many other features to help ensure that your passwords are secure.

MyID Guard, however, can be an excellent bonus if you don’t want a password manger or are comfortable with basic dark web monitoring. This will let you see if your email and passwords have been compromised.

Content Blocker

CyberGhost VPN has a Content Blocker that blocks both malicious and scam websites.

CyberGhost warned me instead about potentially hazardous websites that Chrome had not detected. CyberGhost will not alert you if you go to a potentially dangerous website. CyberGhost will not prevent you from downloading malicious software to your computer. McAfee Total Security is a great internet security suite.

CyberGhost VPN Ad Blocker doesn’t block ads like ProtonVPN NetShield. It blocked the majority of ads on websites I visited. CyberGhost’s Content Blocker still detects phishing websites.

CyberGhost VPN Privacy & Security

CyberGhost VPN has a strict no-logs policy. CyberGhost does NOT store information about your IP address, browsing history, or downloaded files.

CyberGhost VPN collects standard data like all VPNs. These include your email address, payment details and your payment details. These information are used to make payments and communicate with users (e.g. to send you updates, or reset your password ).

CyberGhost offers a summary of their privacy policy on their website, which I find far more appealing than reading the entire thing. However, the full-length version can be too complicated and lengthy. I prefer the privacy policy to be written in a simpler format, such as TunnelBear.

CyberGhost VPN’s location is in Romania. It doesn’t have any data retention laws.

CyberGhost VPN releases a transparency report every three months. It lists all requests for user data it has received from law enforcement agencies and government agencies. It also shows how CyberGhost VPN declined to comply every request.

CyberGhost VPN follows a comprehensive policy that leaves no logs. It is not part 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances.

CyberGhost VPN Speed & Performance

I conducted speed tests on CyberGhost VPN server servers. Many had very fast speeds for streaming, gaming, browsing and general browsing.

When I was connected to a US server (my address), the fastest speeds I experienced were. CyberGhost VPN was able to provide excellent speeds when I connected via a US server (my location). What really surprised me was that it also provided good speeds when connecting from distant countries like Australia.

To establish a baseline internet speed, I did a speed test by myself without CyberGhost VPN servers.

Next, I connected via CyberGhost’s FastConnect feature. I noticed a significant improvement in the speed with which my downloads were made.

After connecting to a UK server, my download speed dropped approximately 45%. It was not noticeable but it still allowed me to watch YouTube videos in HD. All of my videos were immediately started and played smoothly.

Connecting to a Sydney server caused my connection speed to drop by 23%. This was similar to my connection in the UK. Although my ping did not increase, it did go up a little. It took some time for websites and streaming videos to load. I was surprised that they started playing almost immediately, even though I chose 1440p on YouTube.

CyberGhost VPN works very fast. Even from faraway servers, like Australia, it can lag a bit. I loved how the VPN streamed video at 1080p or 720p quality. Quick Connect connected me to a US server. I found the best thing about my connection was its speed — there wasn’t one slowdown.

CyberGhost VPN servers rely on physical servers. This means that the server can be found in the country where you are connected. CyberGhost also uses virtual servers from 29 other countries. This allows you an IP address in the country that you are connecting to, even though the server is physically located elsewhere. I prefer physical servers over virtual ones, as they are more reliable. But virtual servers can still work.

CyberGhost provides dedicated servers for gaming and streaming. Low pings make online multiplayer games easier to play. CyberGhost VPN torrenting server is available in 65+ countries and optimized for quick P2P downloading.

CyberGhost VPN uses shared Ips. This is a good thing, as you will be able use the same IP address as hundreds of other users, if not thousands. This provides you with additional anonymity. CyberGhost VPN gives you the option to buy an exclusive IP address.

CyberGhost VPN’s server network is outstanding. Although CyberGhost VPN utilizes shared IPs, you may also buy dedicated IP addresses.

Netflix stopped me from using regular CyberGhost US servers even though I was in the US. The Netflix-optimized CyberGhost Server instantly removed the blockage. I was able watch full HD movies and documentaries with no problems.
