ESET is an antimalware scanner with powerful diagnostic tools. It also offers a variety of additional features. All of this is possible with an intuitive user interface.ESET may not be the most expensive of all antivirus suites, but it is still a good choice.

ESET’s powerful malware scanner provides real-time protection and many scanning options. This makes it possible to protect your computer against malware from Windows or Mac.

All ESET scan options were run on my machine, and all of them worked perfectly.

These ESET scans are

  • System Scan. This scan scans all files on your computer including those that are currently running or cached.
  • Custom Scan. Scans individual folders and files.
  • Removeable Devices Scan. Scans flash drive and external hard drives.

To test each scan option, I had nearly 1000 malware samples hidden on my computer and in removable devices. It’s almost as efficient as antiviruses such as Bitdefender or Norton.

The Custom Scan found almost all of the malware samples that I had placed in my folders. The Removable Device Scan showed all the malware threats on my USB stick.

The entire system scan took six hours. I was impressed with the speed of all three ESET scans. This is a slower scan than Avira or Norton. The entire system scan took 6 hours.

ESET’s system scan takes longer than other antiviruses because it scans areas that other antiviruses can’t. This includes your operating memory (Windows only) and WMI repository. Users who want more protection will appreciate ESET’s system scan.

ESET does not offer a quick scan. This is disappointing. It scans critical locations in less than two minutes.

Scheduling scans with ESET can be confusing.

ESET also offers a Host Intrusion Prevention System. It scans your computer for rootkits and ransomware. ESET detected multiple rootkits, blocked them and failed to encrypt files.

ESET is an antivirus that protects your computer from malware. It is slow to scan and does not offer a quick scan option.

Anti-Phishing

ESET’s phishing protection kept me from accessing unsafe sites. It also flagged sites that were safe and made it difficult to whitelist any false positives.

PhishTank, an online database that tracks hundreds of Phishing websites each day, is called PhishTank. It was used to test the protection. I stopped Chrome from accessing any verified sites that were phishing.

ESET’s Anti-phishing Protections, however, were a bit too strict. ESET blocked websites that weren’t listed on PhishTank. Although I was able whitelist the sites, it blocked others.

ESET’s antiphishing features are excellent at blocking access to dangerous websites. It can be annoying to add exceptions for false positives.

Firewall

I was impressed with the performance ofESET’s firewall during my testing.

There are many filters available through the firewall. Many of these options are not very useful.

  • Automatic mode. No user interaction. This mode allows the majority of outbound traffic flow, while blocking most inbound traffic.
  • Interactive mode. You can block connections that are not recognised or allow them to be blocked.
  • Policy-based mode. Blocks all connections unless the user has created a rule to allow them.
  • Learning mode. Creates, saves, and tracks rules based on user activity.

Users will most likely prefer to remain in the Automatic mode. ESET can offer the Learning mode to help those who want to train the firewall to perform according to their network preferences. The machine-learning method used in the learning mode creates firewall rules that are tailored to your preferences.

Interactive mode was annoying to me. In a matter of 10 minutes, I received at most 10 of these pop-ups. Bitdefender firewall recognizes unrecognized connections and displays a notice in the lower corner of my screen. You can ignore the notice if you aren’t busy.

My tests showed that ESET’s firewall performed well. It can help protect your computer against network attacks but I recommend you use Automatic mode.

Network Inspector (Windows only).

ESET’s Network Inspector scans every device connected to your home network. It can detect weak passwords and vulnerable ports.

Network Inspector took just 15 minutes to scan my entire network. It also indicated whether the services were secure.

Advanced users can use these insights to identify potential risks in their system. This is a warning sign that Running Processes should not be relied on by those who lack the technical skills to recognize them.

System Cleaner (Windows only).

ESET’s “System Cleaner” is a simple tool, which doesn’t provide many optimization features like other antiviruses.

System Cleaner can reset Windows settings to default, or to return to a previously created system restore point. It can also reset your wallpaper.

ESET parental controls are not more secure than a content filter. In the options, you can edit or create exceptions manually.

I disabled the parental controls. I turned off the parental controls to ensure that the screening could filter content suitable for a 9-year-old.

ESET’s password managers protect passwords using 256bit encryption (the industry norm), offer multi-devicesynchronization and have good auto-fill/auto-save abilities, but nothing else. If you are looking for advanced tools like password auditing or data breach alerts, dark Web monitoring, and other features, then you should look into 1Password or Dashlane.

The Gamer Mode in ESET is very simple, but very useful. Full-screen software suspends all notifications and scans. You can play movies and video games without interruptions thanks to BullGuard.

Secure Data is a device control option that prevents certain users from accessing data on USB devices, CD/DVD drives, SD card readers or other storage media. It took me about 10 minutes to set it up. After that, it worked very well.

McAfee’s Webcam Protection will ask you for permission every time an app or website attempts to access the webcam. ESET does not offer microphone protection.

ESET’s spam filters and secure internet browser were not my favourite. These programs already have spam filtering.

The additional features of ESET are average. However, they are still superior to most antivirus programs.

Pricing and ESET Plans

ESET offers three pricing options. These plans can be classified as Essential, Advanced, or Ultimate.

ESET’s main product, Windows packages, is not compatible with all operating systems. Instead, you will be directed where the most appropriate software is available for each OS. Each OS has its own features and protection levels. However, you can still purchase at least one plan and use the best available software for each OS.

This mid-range plan, Internet Security For Windows (or Cyber Security to Mac), offers the best combination of security features. It is slightly more expensive that TotalAV’s midrange Internet Security Plans, which include a VPN and excellent tune up tools.

Each plan from ESET covers one device. Each additional device will incur an additional cost. This includes other operating systems than Windows. You can purchase Internet Security for 3 devices. Licenses can be used on either an Android or Mac. Each OS will have the software package.

While the cost of ESET per unit is prohibitive for large families or groups that need to share their internet security plans, will still work for those who only require coverage for one or two devices.

ESET Essential: NOD32 Antivirus For Windows and Linux (Cyber Security to Mac)

ESET’s NoD32 Antivirus is the most basic anti-virus program. It includes:

  • Anti-malware scanner.
  • Anti-phishing protection.
  • Ransomware detection.
  • Gaming mode.

Cyber Security Mac Version includes the antimalware scanner as well as antiphishing protection. The ransomware detector, gamer and antiphishing modes are not compatible with macOS.

NoD32Antivirus, which costs D911,980 per year, is a low-cost antivirus that will suit anyone who needs it. Avira offers better packages, but NOD32Antivirus has more options.

NoD32Antivirus is a good choice for people who don’t require extra protection but just need a basic scanner.

ESET Advanced: Internet Security Pro for Windows (Cyber Security Pro Pro for Mac)

ESET’s Internet Security is priced at D1,140,000.030 an year. It is not as cost-effective as other products with similar features and malware detection capabilities, such as TotalAV span>.

Internet Security from ESET (main/Windows version) Many of the features aren’t great. However, many of the features are not very useful.

ESET Ultimate: Smart Security Premium Windows

ESET Smart Security Premier can only be used by Windows users. ESET claims the package is compatible with both Android and Mac. It is not. This plan can only be used on Windows devices. Smart Security Premium is a plan that protects your Mac or Android. Smart Security Premium directs users to the right plans for each OS: Cyber Security Pro Mac, Mobile Security Pro Android.

Priced at D1,368,080/year Smart Security Premier Includes everything in the Internet Security bundle, plus 3 additional features: A password manager and device encryption. LiveGuard is a cloud-based scanner that detects zero-day threats.

Although the password manager is functional, it lacks key features such as password sharing, emergency access and password sharing.

Device encryption, including password manager, isn’t as good as other products. However, most modern computers have data encryption. These are as effective as ESET’s encryption features.

LiveGuard is an excellent option. Smart Security Premium doesn’t offer this feature.

Smart Security premium doesn’t offer much. Norton 360 or Bitdefender should be considered if they are your top choice for anti-virus software.

ESET Setup and Use Ease

Although the user interface is simple, it contains many complex features. Click on a feature to open it. It will appear in the middle of the dashboard.

Some features might not be intuitive or clear, and it may take longer to set up than you need.

ESET’s antimalware protection works by default. You can however customize it. This is particularly frustrating since Avira and other companies offer quick scans.

ESET is a trusted antivirus. ESET’s features can be difficult to set up and those with less technical knowledge may not understand the more complex features.

ESET Mobile App

ESET’s mobile app is excellent, but it only works for Android. Mobile Security can either be added-on or purchased as a standalone product.

Mobile Safety includes many of ESET’s most important features including:

  • Wi-Fi security.
  • Anti-theft protection.
  • Call filter.
  • Security audit/report.

These features work in the same way as ESET for PC on Android and block all malware that I have installed on my phone. This includes ransomware, spyware and ransomware.

I was also able to log into the online anti-theft platform and locate my phone in minutes. Bitdefender’s mobile app allows you to send messages but cannot remotely set off alarms or wipe your data.

ESET Mobile Safety showed me important settings and permissions on my device and sent me push notifications when there was a problem. It also looked at apps for suspicious behavior.

ESET’s Call Filter allows you to block unknown number and can even be used for blocking certain numbers.

Overall, ESET’s mobile app is very good. It is not as good as TotalAV or Norton’s mobile apps, which includes a VPN and password manager.

ESET’s Android application is still a great low-cost way to protect Android.
