Intego — Best overall macOS antivirus and anti-malware protection in 2022.

Finding a good Mac anti-virus is hard. I’ve tested all the macOS ones and am confident that:

It’s not perfect but Intego’s two macOS antivirus engines, VirusBarrier & NetBarrier, have done a lot to help me. They scored extremely well during my testing.

Intego Full Review

Intego, my favorite internet security software for Macs in 2022.

Intego has the ability to detect and eradicate all Mac-specific malicious software that I tested. It also includes many security features that are much more effective than Apple’s protections.

Intego offers a Premium Bundle X9 plan which includes Intego’s antivirus scanner, firewall as well as web security and data back-up. This bundle has more functionality and is cheaper than other Mac anti-viruses.

Intego Security Features

VirusBarrier — Malware scanning

VirusBarrier – Intego’s anti-malware scanner.

The dashboard of has the most important virus protection tools, such as an antivirus scanner, real-time protection engine and scan scheduling.

VirusBarrier will scan your entire Mac as well as all connected drives. This allows users to search for malware hidden on their iPhones or iPads. Apple Mail app users will need to connect to their email accounts.

I began my tests by performing a Quick Scan. The scan was quick and only took two minutes. It scanned over 200,000 files.

After downloading a bunch of Mac malware samples to test, I ran another Full Scan. VirusBarrier detected virtually every threat on the device, including trojans and adware. The engine instantly blocked all the ransomware attempts.

Intego made it possible to respond immediately to any threats. I was given three options:

• Trust — Declares dangers as safe.
• Quarantine — Holds dangerous files in a secure vault.
• – Cleans infected viruses

After each scan was done, I clicked Repair. However 6 of the potentially dangerous files in the “Logs” section had shown “Repair Failure”. This isn’t a major issue as all files are quarantined. It would have been nice if the software had notified me that the repair was ineffective so I could get to work sooner.

VirusBarrier also offers a Safe Browsing On feature, which checks if a user is using anti-phishing tools. Intego could have more web security options. VirusBarrier offers an Email Viral Scan option which is a compromise to the insufficient web-security tools. Other Mac antiviruses don’t offer email scanning.

Overall, I like VirusBarrier due to its wide range of scan options. I love VirusBarrier because it offers so many scan options.

NetBarrier — Mac Firewall

NetBarrier, Intego’s advanced firewall, provides additional options that aren’t available with the Mac’s built-in firewall.

NetBarrier determines which network your MacBook is connected to and adjusts its firewall security settings accordingly.

NetBarrier alerts users to background apps and programs trying to make internet connection. It allows users to select whether to allow connections or deny them.

NetBarrier Tab offers an overview of all programs trying connect to the internet.

Intego did an amazing job. The NetBarrier Firewall is a great firewall.

ContentBarrier — Parental Controls

ContentBarrier from Intego is a parental protection program. ContentBarrier can do more than simply block dangerous websites. It can capture screenshots, and it will block any inappropriate websites.

You can monitor the internet activity of your children by looking at their chat room. You can also choose to restrict access to a small number of websites. Ask your child before you allow them to access the blocked websites.

You can also opt to receive email reports that include regular reports on your child’s Mac use including sites visited, emails sent and received and chat history.

My favorite feature of ContentBarrier is its Anti-Predator monitoring. This alerts users to bad actors online. ContentBarrier sends me emails whenever it detects potentially malicious words or phrases being sent via chat rooms or messaging apps.

ContentBarrier can sometimes be difficult to set-up. I found it difficult to set ContentBarrier up.

ContentBarrier offers many more features than the default Mac parental system. I believe parents will love the extensive options and the frequent activity reporting.

Washing Machine – Mac System Optimizer

Washing Machine integrates a variety system organization and Mac cleaning tool into one app

Intego’s Washing Machine doesn’t have Mac speedups like Avira’s Speedup Mac but I really appreciate what Intego has.

The software can be loaded using 3 options:

• Reclaim
• Duplicates
• Organize

Reclaim

To find junk files, I ran a scan across my entire device.

It took only 5 minutes to complete the initial scan. The initial scan found around 20 GB of junk files. These included logs caches. Downloads, downloads. and trash.

I was able to select the files I wanted to remove from my Mac and then click Clean. The files were immediately removed from my Mac.

Duplicates I had my Mac scanned for duplicate files. Sometimes, it found 6 versions of the exact file.

To clear out some space on the hard disk, I was then able select and delete duplicates . The unique feature allows you to see the duplicate files before you delete them

This tool organizes your files and apps. You can arrange your files in folders, rearrange your apps and create new Smart Folders. Smart Folders are folders that appear to be on the left hand side Mac’s menu bar, such as Applications, AirDrop and downloads.

Organise was my favorite feature within Intego’s Washing Machine. I was able to drag and drop files into certain folders or into a trash bin.

I was already very organized, so it wasn’t necessary to rearrange it.

Washing Machine offers a variety of amazing features. Intego can also add system speedups but most Mac users will be happy with Washing Machine.

Personal Backup — Customizable Backups

Personal Backup can be used to back up important files. It works exactly the same as Apple’s Time Machine. It’s also more personal.

Personal Backup allowed me to save certain files to either an internal hard drive, or an external integrated drive.

Personal Backup has the unique ability schedule multiple backups.

Personal Backup also offers several other options, including:

• Bootable Backup
• Synchronize
• Restore

Bootable Backup

The current Mac OS X version can be used to backup your entire Mac OS X installation. This means that if your Mac is damaged, you can simply transfer your entire Mac OS X installation to another Mac.

Sync allows multiple devices to sync files.

The restore function does exactly what its name says. It restores backups to your external drives.

Personally, Personal Backup is far better than Apple Time Machine.
