I find it difficult to find good Mac antivirus software. After testing almost all of the macOS antiviruses, I am confident that:

Although it’s not perfect, Intego’s two macOS malware prevention engines, VirusBarrier and NetBarrier, have been a great help to me. They scored extremely high in my testing.

Intego Full Review

Intego was my top internet security suite for Macs, in 2022.

Intego was able to detect and eliminate all Mac-specific malware I tested. Intego also offers many security features that are significantly better than Apple’s.

Intego offers the premium BundleX9 plan, which includes the Intego anti-virus scanner, firewall, web security and data backup. This bundle offers more functionality than other Mac antiviruses and is less expensive.

Intego Security Features

VirusBarrier — Malware Scanning

VirusBarrier by Intego is Intego’s malware scanner.

The dashboard has all the essential tools for virus protection, including an anti-virus scanner and a real-time protection tool. It also includes scan scheduling, malware removal and scan scheduling.

VirusBarrier is able to scan your entire Mac and any connected drives. This allows you check for malicious files hidden on your iPhone and iPad. Apple Mail will allow users to connect to their email accounts.

My tests began with a Quick Scan. I started my tests by running a Quick Scan. It took less than 2 minutes to scan over 200,000 files. The Full Scan took over 10 minutes.

After downloading a few Mac malware samples, I ran another Full Scan. VirusBarrier found almost all threats on my device, including trojans and adware, as well as ransomware scenarios. The engine stopped all simulated ransomware attempts.

Intego allowed me to respond quickly to all threats. It also provided me with three options:

• Trust — Declares dangers as safe.
• Quarantine — Holds dangerous files in a secure vault.
• Repair — Clears infected files with viruses

After each scan was complete, I clicked Repair. However, 6 of the potentially hazardous files had failed to be repaired. It would have been nice to know that the repair was not successful so I could make a change sooner.

VirusBarrier also offers a “Safe Browsing On”, which checks if a browser uses anti-phishing software. Intego could provide more web security tools. However, VirusBarrier’s Email Viral Scan option makes up for the lack of such web-security features. A Mac antivirus that offers email scanning is not available to me.

Overall, I love VirusBarrier’s variety of scan options. I like VirusBarrier for its variety of scan options.

NetBarrier — Mac Firewall

NetBarrier is Intego’s advanced firewall. It offers more options than the built-in firewall on Macs.

NetBarrier automatically detects the network you use and adjusts your firewall security settings accordingly.

NetBarrier is an excellent tool that warns users about background scripts and other apps trying to connect to the internet. NetBarrier allows users to decide whether or not to allow these connections.

NetBarrier’s apps tab provides a complete overview of all programs trying to connect to the internet.

I love the NetBarrier Firewall.

ContentBarrier — Parental Controls

ContentBarrier by Intego can be used as a parental control program. ContentBarrier does more than block dangerous websites. It also has keystroke tracking and antipredator alarms. It can also capture screenshots and block inappropriate websites.

Monitor your children’s internet usage by accessing their chat room. You can also block a select few websites. Before allowing your child to access blocked websites, ask permission.

Parents can choose to receive regular emails with reports about their child’s Mac usage, such as the websites visited, email sent, received, and chat history.

I love the Anti-Predator Monitoring function in ContentBarrier. It alerts users when it detects potentially malicious phrases or words being used through chat rooms or messaging apps.

It can be complicated to set up ContentBarrier. It can be difficult to set up ContentBarrier.

ContentBarrier’s many features are a significant improvement on the default Mac parental control system. Parents will appreciate the variety of options and regular activity reports.

Washing Machine — Mac System Optimizer

Washing Machine combines a variety of system organization tools and Mac cleaning tools in one app

Intego’s Washing Machine might not offer any Mac speedup options like Avira Speedup for Mac, but I really love what Intego has to offer.

There are three options when you load the software:

• Reclaim
• Duplicates
• Organize

Reclaim

I ran an entire scan of my device to find files that were missing or deleted.

Initial scan took just five minutes. There were approximately 20 GB worth of junk files found. This includes logs caches and downloads.

After selecting the files that I wanted to delete from my Mac’s hard drive, I clicked Clean. The files were instantly deleted from my Mac.

Duplicates Scan my Mac for duplicate files Found over 900 files — sometimes 6 copies of the same file.

I used to clear some space on my hard drive. Duplicates have a unique feature that lets you see duplicate files before you delete them

Organise is a great tool to organize your desktop files, rearrange your apps in your Dock, and create “Smart Folders”, folders that are located to the left side of Mac’s File Finder. These folders include Applications, AirDrop downloads, and others.

Organise is my favorite feature in Intego’s Washing Machine. Drag and drop files into specific folders or to the trash bin.

The layout was already well-organized so it didn’t seem necessary to change it.

Washing Machine has a lot of great functions. Duplicates and Reclaim are good but Organize is my favorite — it’s not available in Mac-based programs such as Airo AV or MacKeeper. Intego might also consider speeding up the system, but most Mac users love Washing Machine.

Personal Backup — Customizable Backups

Personal Backup is a tool for backing up files that are important. It functions in the same manner as Apple’s Time Machine. It’s personal, however.

Personal backup allowed me to back certain files and folders to an external hard drive or to an external integrated hard disk.

Personal backup has the unique ability of scheduling multiple backups which is fantastic. I set up my work-related documents to back up every hour and backed up my music files weekly.

Personal backup also offers many other options, such as:

• Bootable Backup
• Synchronize
• Restore

Bootable Backup

With the current Mac OS X version, you can back up your entire Mac OS X. This allows you to easily backup your entire Mac OS X system with the current version installed on your Mac.

Synchronize allows file sync between multiple devices.

This restore does exactly what it says: it restores all backups to your external drive.

I personally find Personal Backup far superior to Apple’s Time Machine.
