It can be difficult to find an excellent Mac antivirus. After testing almost all the macOS antiviruses, I am confident that:

Intego has been my favourite internet security suite for Macs since 2022.

Intego can detect and remove all Mac-specific malware, which I tested. It has additional security features that are far more effective than Apple’s.

VirusBarrier – Malware Scanning

This dashboard contains essential security tools such as an anti-virus scanner. It also has a real time protection engine. Scan scheduling, malware removal, and scan scheduling.

VirusBarrier can scan your entire Mac, as well as any connected drives. This allows you find malicious files hidden on your iPad or iPhone. VirusBarrier is able to scan email for viruses. Users will need Apple’s Mail App to connect their email accounts.

The Quick Scan was the first step in my tests. The scan took less then two minutes and scanned more than 200,000 files. I did then a “Full Scans”. This Full Scan analysed 800,000+ files in just 10 minutes.

After having downloaded several Mac malware samples I ran another Full Scan. VirusBarrier detected almost all threats on my Mac, including trojans as well as potentially dangerous files. I tested VirusBarrier’s realtime engine for malware by launching a variety of ransomware attacks. The engine stopped all simulated ransomware attempts.

Intego enabled me to immediately respond to any threat and gave me three options:

• Trust — Declares dangers as safe.
• Quarantine — Holds dangerous files in a secure vault.
• Repair — Removes viruses from infected files

After each scan was complete, I clicked Repair. While most malware files were repaired successfully, I was surprised to see that six of the potentially hazardous files had failed to be fixed. It isn’t an issue as all files are already quarantined. However, it would have been great to be notified by software that the repair was not successful so I could make an appointment for something else.

VirusBarrier also offers a “Safe Browsing On”, a feature that checks if a web browser is running anti-phishing malware. This feature is useful, but not very useful. Intego could provide more web security tools. VirusBarrier’s Email Viral Scan option, which is a compromise to the lack of web-security features, is a great one. A Mac antivirus program that offers email scanning is not available to me.

Overall, I enjoy VirusBarrier because of its many scan options. The next scans are even faster. I love the ability to scan for viruses on iOS and connected drives. It would make VirusBarrier’s notification of issues with quarantined documents much more easy. VirusBarrier is a powerful antivirus scanner that provides Mac computers high-level protection.

NetBarrier — Mac Firewall

NetBarrier – Intego’s advanced firewall offers more options than Mac’s built-in firewall.

NetBarrier automatically detects the network that you use and adjusts firewall security settings to match. My MacBook was secure from any potential threats linked to Wi-Fi hotspots. You can also manually modify your settings to allow or block both outgoing as well as incoming internet connections.

NetBarrier, a powerful tool that alerts you to background scripts or apps trying to connect to the internet, is great. Users can choose whether or not to allow these connections. During my tests, I was surprised to see how many apps tried to connect with the internet.

NetBarrier’s application tab gives you a complete overview about all programs trying to connect to the Internet. This tab allows you to block or allow specific programs to connect to the internet.

I am a big fan of the NetBarrier Firewall. It is simple to use, offers more functionality than Apple’s firewall and blocks unwanted programs from connecting the internet.

ContentBarrier — Parental Controls

ContentBarrier is a parental control software by Intego. It’s far more advanced than the Mac parental control programs. It also blocks harmful websites. ContentBarrier includes keystroke tracking, anti-predator alarms, and keystroke tracking. It can also record screenshots and block infringing websites.

By viewing your children’s chat room and email, you can monitor their internet use. You can choose to block entire websites, including gambling sites and those with adult content. However, you can choose to only block certain websites. Before you allow your child access to blocked websites, make sure they have permission.

You can also opt to receive email reports that include regular reports on your child’s Mac use including sites visited, email received and sent, chat history, and other information.

What I like most about ContentBarrier’s Anti-Predator monitoring feature is the email notification it sends me whenever it detects potentially harmful phrases or words being sent through chat rooms and messaging apps.

ContentBarrier is difficult to set-up. I wasn’t given clear instructions, and I was unable understand how the software worked. Although I was eventually able to understand the process, I think parental control should not be difficult. Some keystroke tracking functions don’t work well with older Macs. This is quite disappointing.

ContentBarrier’s wide range of features is a big improvement on the default Mac parental controls system. I believe parents will love the many options and the ability to report on activity.

Washing Machine — Mac System Optimizer

Washing Machine brings together a wide variety of system organization and Mac cleaning instruments into one app

Intego’s Washing Machine doesn’t have Mac speedup options such as Avira Speedup for Mac, but I really like what Intego offers.

You have 3 options to load the software.

• Reclaim
• Duplicates
• Organize

Reclaim

I ran a scan on my entire device, looking for files that had been removed or not being used. Each Reclaimscan was filtered to reveal particular junk files.

In just 5 minutes, the initial scan was complete. A total of 20 GB were found in junk files, which included logs caches as well as downloads, downloads and trash.

Select the files you want to be deleted from your Mac and click Clean. It immediately deleted the files from my Mac.

Duplicates ran a scan of my Mac to search for duplicate files. It detected over 900 duplicate Mac files, sometimes 6 copies of the same file.

I was able to delete duplicates and clear some space from my hard drive. You can see duplicate files in duplicates before you delete them.

Organize is a handy tool that lets users clean up their files. I was able organize my desktop files in folders, arrange the apps in my Dock, and create “Smart Folders”, which are folders that are located to the left of Mac’s Mac’s Finder. These folders include applications, AirDrop, downloads etc.

Intego’s Washing Machine is my favorite feature, Organise. I was able to quickly clean up random desktop screenshots.

It was already organized and I didn’t feel the need to reorganize it. If you have many apps that are not yet installed, it may be helpful.

Washing Machine offers many amazing features. Although Reclaim, Duplicates and Organize are excellent features, I really love Organize — it is not available with Mac-based programs such as Airo AV or MacKeeper. Most Mac users are happy with Washing Machine.

Personal Backup — Customizable Backups

Personal Backup is an application that can be used to backup important files. It works the same as Apple’s Time Machine. It is more personal.

Personal Backup allowed me to backup certain files and folders to my internal hard drive, or to an external integrated hard disk.

Personal Backup allows you to schedule multiple backups. It is amazing. I set up weekly backups of my music and all work-related documents to be backed up every hour.

Individual Backup offers several additional options, including:

• Bootable Backup
• Synchronize
• Restore

Bootable Backup

Your entire Mac OS X system can be backed up with the latest version. This allows you to easily transfer your entire Mac OS X system to another Mac if your Mac is damaged. It takes just minutes to update OS X or reinstall the OS. This is incredible.

Synchronize allows for file sync between multiple devices. If you modify a file on your Mac, it will also effect the file on your external drive. This is particularly useful if you have multiple devices, such an iMac to use for work and a MacBook that you want to bring with you when you travel.

RestoreDoes exactly what it claims — restores any backups made to your external hard drive.

Personal Backup is my personal favorite backup software. I don’t trust Apple’s Time Machine. Personal Backup is the best Mac backup program because of its additional features, including file synchronization and the possibility to back up my whole Mac system (including OS X).
