After spending several weeks researching and trying IPVanish, I was able to decide if it was worth the money and how it compared with other VPNs.

IPVanish VPN is known for being the best torrenting VPN. It allows P2P traffic on all 1,900+ servers.

IPVanish offers affordable annual plans with user-friendly software. It also allows unlimited simultaneous connection to one account.

IPVanish Features

IPVanish has the following industry-standard options for VPN security:

• AES encryption of 256 bits.IPVanish secures your data using bank-grade encryption.
• No logging policy. HTMLVanish will not log any personal information like your IP address or files downloaded.
• Kill switch. This feature instantly disconnects you from internet access if your VPN connection drops. It isn’t available on iOS.

IPVanish has 7 protocols. These protocols include WireGuard, UDP/TCP, PPTP and L2TP/IPSec. WireGuard also makes me happy. It’s much faster than other protocols. PrivateVPN or TunnelBear don’t offer WireGuard.

IPVanish uses OpenVPN or IPSec to provide perfect forward security. It stops hackers from accessing your data by using any of the encryption keys.

IPVanish offers IPv6 leak protection to all its applications. It only offers DNS leak protection on Windows. WebRTC protection is not offered. WebRTC protection cannot be disabled manually by ExpressVPN, TunnelBear or any other IPVanish competitor.

IPVanish supports The Onion Router. IPVanish uses VPN to protect your IP address from Tor network leaks. Websites took 15-20 seconds to load. This is because the Tor network’s additional layer of encryption took websites around 15-20 seconds to load.

IPVanish also offers split-tunneling as well as obfuscation.

Split-Tunneling

IPVanish’s split tunneling is useful for exclusion of specific apps from VPN tunnels. However, it’s only available for Android or FireOS.

In my testing, I used an IPVanish Server for torrenting. Split tunnelling allowed me to download faster and stream HD video without interruptions.

Split-tunneling functions in the same manner as CyberGhost VPN and ExpressVPN split tunneling. ProtonVPN, on the other hand, allows you to split-tunnel IP addresses, webbrowsers, and apps.

Also, I wish IPVanish provided split tunnelling for different apps, like Private Internet Access. Private Internet Access includes split-tunneling using Windows, Linux, or macOS.

Split tunneling by IPVanish is easy to use, and it’s free of bugs. It can also be used to exclude apps from VPN tunnels for Android and FireOS.

Password Generator

IPVanish’s password generator is free and very easy to use.

My tests took just a few minutes to create my password. You can select how long you want your password to be (upto 20 characters), as well as whether symbols should be used.

This feature is excellent because it quickly helps you create strong passwords. However PureVPN, ExpressVPN and other VPNs have better password generators. These password generators allow you to create stronger passwords. They can also help you create longer passwords with special characters.

Obfuscation

IPVanish offers obfuscation through its Scramble option (available only in OpenVPN), but Scramble has no way to bypass internet firewalls.

IPVanish customer services representatives informed me that its service was blocked in the most restrictive countries.

Scramble is a great VPN that hides your traffic and IP address from your internet service provider (ISP). Scramble has extra encryption layers that can slow down your connection speeds. Scramble can slow down your connection speeds by 41% compared to normal OpenVPN connections. I don’t recommend it for streaming or torrenting.

ExpressVPN is one option. Mullvad VPN is another. These options can bypass internet restrictions.

Scrabble is a traffic obfuscator. It won’t work for certain countries and can significantly slow down your speed.

IPVanish Privacy & Security

IPVanish’s privacy policy clearly states that IPVanish won’t log or track your IP address.

IPVanish does NOT store your email addresses. This is only to communicate and to process payments and refunds.

IPVanish gave user data to the US authorities in 2016. Even though it was helping to catch a child-pornography peddler from South Africa, IPVanish allegedly violated its no logs policy which said that it does not keep IP addresses.

StackPath purchased IPVanish in 2017 from its parent firm. They did an independent audit of IPVanish to verify that it was a no logs VPN. This is a serious lack of transparency.

IPVanish has its headquarters in the US. This is part 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances. A group of countries sharing surveillance data. IPVanish’s headquarters is in the US. Private Internet Access is also located there. Private Internet Access, although it hasn’t conducted an audit of its data, has repeatedly been proven in court documents.

IPVanish has been accused of violating its no logs policy. IPVanish is currently owned by a new company and has a strict policy to prevent any logs.

IPVanish Speed

I ran speed tests connecting all 50+ countries IPvanish hosts. The average speed decrease was 83%. However my location in Romania has the fastest internet connections anywhere in the globe. It is unfair to compare me with someone who has similar speeds. IPVanish decreased his average speed of 33%. This is impressive. WireGuard was by far the fastest protocol for speed testing.

As you would imagine, I was able use servers in my own country at the fastest speeds. However I had to wait around 20-30 seconds for any server to connect. One American colleague said that it took him 10 seconds.

To establish baseline, I performed my first speed test using a browser without connecting to any IPVanish servers.

Next, I used IPVanish QuickConnectfeature to connect with a server in Romania. Large files downloaded quickly and websites loaded immediately, including 4K videos.

Connecting to an American server caused a 91% drop of speed. Sites took 5 seconds to open, while 4K video took 10 seconds. I experienced a 91% drop in speed when connecting to a server in the US. I also did not experience disconnections or freezing while making a VoIP call.

Finally, I could connect to a VPN server Japan. Although 4K videos and websites took five seconds each, I didn’t experience buffering while I was browsing the content.

But I wanted to know the speed of my American colleague using IPVanish. To find out his internet speed, we connected to our local network.

QuickConnect allowed him to connect to a New York City-based server.

My colleague connected to a German Server and experienced a 21% Loss. Websites loaded in 2-3 seconds. It took 25 minutes to upload a 20GB file. That’s quite slow. During a conversation with a friend living in the UK, he did not experience any drop calls or freezes.

His connection speed dropped by 46% after he connected from Australia to a server. Movies and TV shows took about 4 seconds to start. However, once they started, there weren’t any interruptions. Websites can take up 5 seconds to load. However, my colleague managed to maintain very high speeds for torrenting.

IPVanish offers both speeds for remote servers and local servers. However, connections can take upto 30 seconds. It is possible to torrent, game and make VoIP calls from any server with great speeds.

IPVanish Servers & IP addresses

IPVanish offers over 1,900+ servers across 50+ nations and 75+ places.

VPNs are often known for having large servers networks. CyberGhost VPN is home to 7,400+ servers located in more than 90 countries. ExpressVPN is home to 3,300+ servers located in 90+ countries. IPVanish is available in over 90 countries. This makes it easy for users to find servers within their area.

IPVanish – A great VPN that displays both the ping time (how long it takes an internet signal to travel between your device and the VPN server) as well as the server load percentage (how many users are connected). This helps users locate servers quickly.

IPVanish has a great P2P service. It allows torrenting and you can find one near you.

IPVanish claims to own 40,000 IP addresses. This should make it easy for users to access streaming websites and avoid reCAPTCHAs. These are tests websites use for verifying if visitors are humans or bots.

IPvanish has very poor access to streaming services. IPVanish in the UK was tested by me. However, my Canadian colleagues were able view less-known streaming sites, such as Crackle, VRV, CBC.

IPVanish’s customer support representatives admitted that many streaming sites block its service. They recommended I buy StrongDNS (IPVanish’s sister-company) to stream streaming video.

ExpressVPN is the best VPN for streaming.

IPVanish works great for torrenting. IPVanish can also be used with major torrent clients like Deluge or Vuze.

IPVanish’s 25+ SockS5 proxy server servers is something I love. These servers replace your current IP address with the IP address of the country from which you are connected. This speeds up downloads and makes them more reliable.

Before I started torrenting I did IPv6 & WebRTC leak tests on servers in 10 different countries.

HTMLVanish is compatible to Netflix and other streaming websites, but it doesn’t work with Amazon Prime or BBC iPlayer.

IPVanish Mobile Apps, and Desktop Apps are Easy-to-Use

IPVanish offers apps that work on Android, iOS, Windows and MacOS Linux. I was able in just 1-2 minutes to install the desktop applications on my MacBook Pro & Windows 10 PC.

Android

IPVanish’s Android App is simple to use and features an intuitive interface.

It’s simple to manually locate a fast web server using the QuickConnect functionality. IPVanish arranges the servers alphabetically, according to country, ping, or city.

The Android App also gives descriptions of each connection setting. There is split-tunneling as well as wireguard and OpenVPN.

IPVanish Android applications lack DNS leak protection and IPv6 compatibility. But, you can activate the Android OS Kill button. CyberGhost VPN is a great option if you are looking for an Android VPN which has a built-in killing switch.

iOS

IPVanish’s iOS application has a similar layout to the Android App, but it isn’t nearly as feature-rich.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

IPVanish’s desktop applications look very different to its mobile apps. However, they are extremely easy-to-use and have great features. Quick Connect is a feature that makes it easy for users to manually choose servers. You can also see all server locations on a map. Maps can also be found on competitors like TunnelBear or ProtonVPN.

The macOS and Windows applications offer a wide variety of protocols that let you choose from different protocols for different purposes. PPTP is also available as SSTP and PPTP. L2TP is also included in the macOS application. It also offers IPSec.

The kill switch is available for both desktop apps. The Windows app only has IPv6 protection. This protection is not offered by the macOS app.

The support articles are divided into different categories, such as billing questions and setup guides. I found the articles very useful. They solved the majority of my issues and I didn’t need to call customer care as often.

IPVanish is a VPN that provides phone support. It offers support for seven countries: Brazil (USA), Mexico, Australia, Brazil, Brazil, Germany and Brazil. Support is available Monday-Saturday between 7am-7pm CT.

Is IPVanish going slow down my internet speeds?

IPVanish could slow down internet speed but it’s a practice that VPNs use to do this. My US colleague did speed tests and found IPVanish to only reduce internet speed by 38%. However, this is not unusual for VPNs. I was able surf, download torrents, and play video games across all IPVanish servers despite the slowdown.

IPVanish keeps logs?

IPVanish has no logs. IPVanish doesn’t keep logs. IPVanish hasn’t made the results public, which is unlike most VPNs such VyprVPN, ExpressVPN, and TunnelBear.

IPVanish is not offering a free trial. However, it does offer a 30-day refund policy on 1-year plans. This allows you to evaluate the product before you buy a longer term.

While there are many free VPNs out there, I don’t recommend them. These VPNs can slow down your internet speed, log your internet activities, and offer poor customer service.

I would recommend that you use a premium low cost VPN such as IPVanish. A 1-year subscription costs only D85,690 per monthly. This is comparable in price to the best VPNs.
