MacKeeper — Good Mac Antivirus with a Basic VPN 2022

MacKeeper is a security and privacy tool that protects your Macs. In fact it was capable of detecting 99% in my tests and matching the performance of MacOS anti-viruses such as McAfee.

MacKeeper can be an useful antivirus program. It is missing some important features. It doesn’t provide any anti-phishing security. Intego’s features include parental controls and firewalls.

MacKeeper won’t be the most expensive. MacKeeper doesn’t cost a lot, but it is a good choice if your Mac needs an efficient and simple antivirus program.

It’s a powerful, reliable, and real-time antivirus/malware protection tool. It also includes a wide array of security and optimization options such as ID protection and adware surveillance.

MacKeeper might be more expensive than some of its competition, but it has a wide range of pricing options. Every plan comes standard with a 14-day guarantee of your money back.

MacKeeper Antivirus Security Options

Antivirus Scanner

There isn’t a quick scan feature. But, you do have the option to perform a thorough scan. It took 50 minutes. It took only 50 seconds.

As part of my tests, I also downloaded a folder full of Mac malware samples. This contained ransomware, viruses, and other malicious software.

It prompts you to delete or quarantine files. This useful feature shows you a list that contains potentially harmful files. Then you can choose whether you want to mark them safe, or delete them.

After running several scans it became evident that the scan times were getting slower. MacKeeper doesn’t use file cache, so it can skip files that have already been scanned. This reduces scan times. They also did not slow down the device.

It will ask you to enable real-time security the first time that the antivirus scanner runs. Real-time Protection can be activated quickly, and it will remain on until you remove the manual.

MacKeeper’s live antivirus scanner scans all files for malware and runs in the background. After being alerted to the problem, I was instructed to move the files into quarantine in order to be able delete them.

MacKeeper’s anti-virus scanner was very impressive. It is also helpful to know the number of files that were scanned. I am also disappointed that the scanner does no file caching such As Intego. This is my main priority.

Adware Cleaner

Adware Cleaner detects malware on your Mac and eliminates it. Adware cleaners are included in most antivirus products. Avira is a top competitor. MacKeeper and Avira have the most advanced anti-malware programs in the industry.

Adware Cleaner took only 5 minutes to scan my Mac. Many of these malware infections have been around for years. It was easy for me to remove the adware virus from my computer because the original owner was an avid gamer.

Adware Cleaner doesn’t automatically enable real time adware surveillance so I had it activated every time Adware Cleaner ran. A pop-up will open that will allow to activate instant protection with just one click.

Adware Cleaner is extremely impressive. I can rest assured that neither malicious adware nor PUAs are spamming me with useless ads.

ID Theft Guard

Identity theft Guardian is a great tool that protects you from identity theft.

This feature makes MacKeeper stand apart. Bitdefender TotalAV, TotalAV and TotalAV all offer dark-web tracking. MacKeeper ID Theft Guard provides more protection than other products.

The ID Theft Guard will automatically identify every email address associated with your device upon first use. Other email addresses can be manually added to the list to be checked.

ID Theft Guard identified 8 emails addresses from my Mac. Even though most were out-of-date, they could still be used. However, ID Theft Guard detected 8 email addresses on my Mac. Then, a pop-up alerted me 5 minutes later to data breaches in one of my emails!

Despite the 5-minute delay I was impressed at this feature.

ID Theft Guard asked me to verify my identity using a security numbers sent to the email address.

The exact details about each breach were provided to me. It provided details such as name and company details, as well details about the breach. You could also see the password I used.

MacKeeper allows you to click a link which will take you to the site where you can reset your password. Or you can manually change it.

In my instance, the “Sensitive”, a breached company was included. MacKeeper states this is due to legal reasons. If the password is not known, it could compromise an ongoing investigation into possible breaches.

I think ID Theft Guard has an excellent feature. MacKeeper’s protection of my personal data made me feel safer.

VPN Private Connect

Private Connect is MacKeeper’s integrated VPN. And even those that do come with limitations aren’t always very useful.

Privacy Connect works like all VPNs. It hides and encrypts your sensitive information, protects you from hackers, and protects you against IP addresses.

Though many VPNs include antivirus products that don’t work, MacKeeper VPN works well.

TotalAV is my sole antivirus-bundled VPN. It’s my only antivirus-bundled VPN.

MacKeeper VPN speed was impressive in my tests. Download speed was approximately 20% for the “Best-Available” server. This is comparable with standalone brands like ExpressVPN and ProtonVPN.

My upload speeds dropped somewhat when I was connected to a USA server (I reside in Spain), but they were still very high.

While connection speeds to servers in Australia were slower than those at my location, websites loaded in seconds or so and I was able stream a movie online using no buffering. However, the quality of my video was not as good.

MacKeeper VPN is capable of accessing popular streaming websites. Avira VPN cannot access Netflix. MullvadVPN, another standalone VPN, doesn’t offer streaming options.

What I’m most concerned about MacKeeper VPN’s security is that it doesn’t allow me to see how the company handles user data

Also, it turned out that the VPN service is third-party. It is less secure.

The VPN functions just like the other MacKeeper tools. You can manually turn it off or have it connect automatically whenever your Mac starts.

Even though there isn’t much transparency regarding the no logs policy But I was impressed with MacKeeper’s VPN. The VPN add-on for anyone looking to safeguard their computer is an excellent option.

StopAd

StopAd blocks ads. It also stops trackers from following your online activity.

MacKeeper provides this additional feature. Bitdefender (McAfee) and Intego (Intego), do not.

MacKeeper has an extension that blocks ads. It must be enabled in Safari and Google Chrome. MacKeeper instantly opens the page, where you can easily install browser extensions.

Once you’ve opened a new browser page, the browser extension will be enabled. This will enable the browser extension to run in the background whenever the browser extension becomes active.

YouTube tested the feature. It blocked 3 ads and 4 trackers as well as one video. This was done while surfing the internet.

Overall, I love StopAd. It has a simple interface and a clean look.

Safe Cleanup

Safe Cleanup searches your entire Mac for junk files.

Most antivirus tools can safely delete junk file. MacKeeper allows you to include attachments in your cleaner tool.

I find this feature very confusing because there is no prompt for you to check these files before you click Clean. Next, select the junk files that you don’t wish to see and click Clean Junk Files.

“Trash”, is the only category which will issue a warning.

Apple Mail, which I use for all of my email, both personal and business, is what I use. If I had not hit that button, I could have deleted all mail attachments from my folders.

Safecleanup is a great tool for removing unnecessary files from your computer.

Duplicate Finder

Search for duplicate files or photos on your computer.

It took only 2 minutes to scan the files. 504 files were found that took up 445MB space. It will prompt you to look through all files before deleting them. Only duplicate files are allowed to be deleted by default.

Duplicates search requires manual effort. To do this you will need to examine all files and click Remove Selected.

Overall this feature is wonderful. It is very well laid out with clear instructions.

Smart Uninstaller

Smart Installer scans the Mac to remove any unnecessary applications, widgets, and plugins.

Sometimes it is difficult to uninstall macOS applications. You can’t just put them in your trash. Smart Uninstaller, however, will only delete certain components.

This feature isn’t typically included in performance optimizers that come with anti-virus products. MacKeeper makes the feature a welcome one. TotalAV does however not include an app uninstaller. McAfee Intego, McAfee and McAfee include it.

The initial scan was fast and took less time than two minutes. The initial scan took less than 2 minutes. It revealed 24 GB of leftovers including plugins, browser extension and apps.

Apps are automatically sorted by the amount of use they receive. This makes it easy and quick to delete apps.

This feature is very useful. However, the How to Use Smart Uninstaller guide of MacKeeper specifically states that it’s not recommended to delete macOS default apps like Quick Looks and Spotlight. It didn’t need to be tested. If you click Remove Selected, you can rest assured that you won’t accidentally or unintentionally delete any sensitive information.

Smart Uninstaller is a great feature. But, I would love to see more information in the app about what applications can be uninstalled or recommended to be deleted.

Memory Cleaner

Memory Clearer shows you the RAM (random access memory) that your Mac is using. To increase your overall performance, RAM can be released.

It used 8.9GB RAM and took up 22.7MB of the available memory.

The Memory Usage Section will provide details about how memory has been used. To clear your memory, click Cleaning Memory. In a matter of minutes, however, the memory available was back to its previous levels. This was not a good idea.

This screen displays a list of all applications that use the most RAM.

I was confused to find that several grayed-out applications and processes could be very vital, but can still remain opened. This is especially so given MacKeeper’s warning about closing some processes. It is clearly explained on their How to Use Memory Cleanerblog. But it isn’t in the app.

MacKeeper was a heavy user of RAM.

Memory Cleaner doesn’t appeal me. I didn’t want any of the other processes to be closed, in the case that it could cause damage to my Mac. However, my RAM usage was back to where it was before cleaning.

Additional Features

MacKeeper offers Login Items and Find & fix, as well as Update Tracker.

• Update Tracker

Using the Update Tracker, your device scans for all installed applications and determines if any need to update.

Update Tracker identified 5 programs in my device that needed to be updated.

• Login Items

Login Products can help speed up the startup of your Mac by reviewing what applications you have installed when it started up. Intego has no manager for start-ups.

The Login Items scan discovered 18 items that launch every time my device is started. Seven of these were from MacKeeper. It’s ironic that the app designed to improve the speed of my Mac is also the fastest.

Three of the suggested login data were removed (some are not being removed). Login Items are useful for those who are having difficulty starting up their Mac.

• Find & Fix

MacKeeper provides a Find &Fix option that allows you to scan and analyze all MacKeeper options.

The Find & Fix scan identifies all MacKeeper main categories and highlights potential threats.

• Security.
• Cleaning.
• Privacy.
• Performance.

This Find & Fix scan only takes a few minutes. This allows you to quickly see any security or performance issues that may be affecting Macs. This will allow you to identify the most critical areas.

On the main screen displaying Find & Fix scans results, there are two options: click View if you want to view each section detail and then modify them as you like. Or, you can click Fixed Items Safely for MacKeeper’s automatic “fixing” of any item it finds.

The Find & Fix is a wonderful tool that quickly evaluates your device’s security. It doesn’t appeal much to me. The button instantly applies any changes without you being able see.

MacKeeper needs more features. Intego comes with parental controls, anti-phishing protection, and a firewall. These features are far more valuable than MacKeeper.

MacKeeper has many other great features. They weren’t bad for my Mac’s security nor performance.

MacKeeper’s main windows features a menu at the left. It is divided into Security and Cleaning. Privacy items are also available. You will find a chat support system on the right. The default Find & Fix option has a big button to launch a scan. It occupies most of the screen. It isn’t very clear, but it is simple to navigate.
