PrivateVPN Full Review

PrivateVPN was tested over several weeks and then reviewed by me. I wanted it to be secure, fast, and offer intuitive apps. PrivateVPN was tested against the best VPNs in order to determine its worth.

PrivateVPN isn’t as feature-rich as other VPNs and offers fewer servers. However, it does provide privacy features and performed well in my streaming and speed tests. It’s also more affordable than other VPNs.

PrivateVPN Features

PrivateVPN includes the following security options:

• AES encryption that protects sensitive data. Governments, military and other organizations around the globe use it.
• No logs policy. PrivateVPN doesn’t log your internet traffic.
• Kill button. This feature protects traffic traffic from being lost when the VPN connection drops. It is only available for Android and Windows users.

PrivateVPN apps may prove to be extremely useful, as they offer DNS leak protection. I also ran 10 DNS test while connecting 10 servers.

PrivateVPN doesn’t provide WebRTC coverage. ProtonVPN (ExpressVPN) and ProtonVPN (top VPNs) offer WebRTC support. Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN have browser extensions. These extensions don’t exist in PrivateVPN so you’ll need a third-party application (such as uBlock Source) to prevent WebRTC leaks.

PrivateVPN has additional security features including Stealth VPN, obfuscation and Tor support.

Stealth VPN

StealthVPN, PrivateVPN’s obfuscation function, hides your VPN traffic (from your ISP or other third parties).

Your ISP may see that you use VPNs, but not what your internet activity is. PrivateVPN VPNs use obfuscation to make it appear that you are using a VPN.

Stealth VPN allows you bypass restrictions in certain countries, such as China, Iran, or Indonesia.

Stealth VPN could slow down your internet speed. This is because it adds another layer encryption to your traffic. There were no buffering issues once the videos were loaded.

TunnelBear as well as ExpressVPN offer similar obfuscation features to Stealth VPN. While all three can bypass internet restrictions, ExpressVPN is my favorite because they offer the best speeds.

Tor Support

All PrivateVPN Servers allow you to connect To The Onion Router.

PrivateVPN provides excellent Tor support. But there are many VPN services that offer better Tor functionality. ProtonVPN allows for browsing.onion websites via normal browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

PublicVPN should be used when you use Tor browser.

PrivateVPN Security & Privacy

PrivateVPN uses a transparent policy to prohibit logging.

PrivateVPN claims they don’t record your email addresses. These privacy policies are for communication purposes only.

PrivateVPN headquarters is in Sweden. This country is part 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances which allows for intelligence sharing between different countries. Sweden has mandatory data storage laws. PrivateVPN does NOT have to give or keep any user data.

PrivateVPN has a problem with its policy of no logs. This is particularly significant as it applies to a country that is part the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances.

PrivateVPN’s transparency and no-logs policies are transparent. PrivateVPN’s transparency and no-logs policies have not been audited. It doesn’t store any personal data, traffic, or any other data. Therefore, it wouldn’t be able to share data with the government.

PrivateVPN Speed

PrivateVPN speed test results in 60+ countries were used to determine its VPN speed. This is a significant drop from my baseline speed. I was capable of streaming, torrenting, playing, and playing on almost all servers.

I checked my speed before I began my tests (without PrivateVPN). This gave me an indication of my speed.

Next, I connected to a VPN service in Romania. The ping (or how long it took for my internet connection to reach the PrivateVPN Server) actually fell.

Before trying PrivateVPN speeds, a colleague of mine conducted his first speed testing connecting to his local network.

My colleague then connected via PrivateVPN Server to New York. His streaming, torrenting, and browsing speeds did not suffer from the connection to a server local.

Next was to connect with a server in Germany. It was remarkable to see that he was able to download at a rate that was 30%.

My colleague was connected through a Japanese server. His download speed was 46 percent slower than the German one. Websites took between 5-6 second to load. There was also minor buffering when watching YouTube videos.

PrivateVPN works fast. I experienced great connection speeds when connected with local servers. However, I didn’t experience any drops on distant servers. I was able watch HD videos at high speeds, and to download P2P file.

PrivateVPN is a great P2P service. Although you can download torrents from every server, PrivateVPN recommends using the Swedish servers. PrivateVPN representatives confirmed that torrenting was possible from all servers.

PrivateVPN was able to allow me to download many documents. PrivateVPN only took 30-35 mins.

The app’s features, while rich and user-friendly, are extremely useful. It is very easy to use, even if you have never used VPN before.

This home screen is very easy to use.

PrivateVPN’s Settings Tab lets you select which OpenVPN protocol to use (I prefer UDP rather than TCP as it is much faster). The Set tab contains the Stealth VPN kill switch, and Stealth VPN features.

PrivateVPN has 128 bit AES encryption, and 256 bits encryption. To stream fast, you can also use 128bit AES.

When your phone turns on, or restarts, you can have the app set to automatically connect via VPN to protect your data.

PrivateVPN Android App is great. A single tap can connect you with a server.

iOS

PrivateVPN’s iOS application is intuitive and features a similar design to its Android app.

The iOS App does not offer IPv6 protection or a death switch.

Although there are a few missing features in the iOS app, it is still very user-friendly. It was easy to connect and switch between servers, browse content, and stream it.

PrivateVPN’s iOS app uses IKEv2/IPSec to make it more efficient than its Android counterpart.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

PrivateVPN’s desktop software was used on my Windows 10 notebook as well as my MacBook.

Windows App allows you to choose between two view modes. Simple View or Advanced View.

The Basic view is perfect for beginners. From the main screen, you can view your account as well as access live support.

Advanced View will appeal to more experienced users. PrivateVPN provides similar connections on mobile devices. It offers OpenVPN and PPTPVPN protocols. There you will be able to determine which port is used for forwarding your connection.

PrivateVPN can be also enabled in the Settings Tab. The device will connect automatically to a server after you turn it on.
