PrivateVPN was tested and reviewed by me over a period of several weeks. I wanted to find out if it offers good security, speed, and intuitive apps. PrivateVPN was compared with top VPNs to determine its value.

PrivateVPN doesn’t offer many additional features, and it has a smaller number of servers than other VPNs. However, it does have privacy features and performed well during my speed and streaming tests. The interface is very easy and it is less expensive than other VPNs.

PrivateVPN offers four internet protocols: OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPSec/IPSec, and PPTP. PrivateVPN should include WireGuard, CyberGhost VPN or Private Internet Access. WireGuard performed slightly higher than other protocols in my tests.

PrivateVPN apps can be very useful as they have DNS leak protection built-in. I also ran 10 DNS leak test while connecting to 10 servers. My IP address and DNS addresses were not revealed.

A colleague of mine ran his first speed test connecting with his local network, before he tried PrivateVPN speeds.

The next step was to connect to a server in Germany. It was quite remarkable that he was able download at a rate of 30%. He confirmed that he could watch HD TV and movies without buffering. It took about 10 seconds for the content on his computer to load. You could also play video games without interruptions. Sites took an extra 1-2 seconds to load.

My colleague was connected to a Japanese server and experienced a slower download speed (46%) than when he was connected with the German server. Websites took between 5-6 seconds to load, and there was minor buffering while watching YouTube videos.

It is feature-rich but user-friendly. I found it easy to use, even for someone who has never used a VPN before.

The app can be set to automatically connect to a VPN server when your phone is turned on or restarted. This will protect your data from being accidentally exposed.

PrivateVPN’s iOS app is easy to use and has a similar design as the Android app.

The iOS app does not offer IPv6 leak protection, or a kill switch.

The iOS app is lacking a few features but it was extremely user-friendly and reliable. It was simple to connect to servers and switch between them, browse content, and stream it.

PrivateVPN’s iOS application has IKEv2/IPSec which makes it more efficient than the Android version.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

PrivateVPN’s desktop app was used on my Windows 10 laptop as well as my MacBook.

Windows App offers two view modes: Simple View or Advanced View. This is a wonderful feature.

The Simple view is great for beginners. You can view your account and access live support from the main screen.

Step-by-step instructions, including video tutorials, are available as well as frequently asked questions (FAQs) and live chat 24/7. PrivateVPN offers email support but not phone support.

PrivateVPN’s setup instructions are extremely helpful. These guides include videos and provide lots of information. The FAQs did not address all of my questions. For most of my questions, I needed to contact live chat or by email.
