ProtonVPN Features

ProtonVPN provides all necessary VPN privacy features, such as:

• AES encryption of 256 bits. Also known as “military-grade” encryption.
• No logs policy. ProtonVPN doesn’t keep logs of any online activity.
• Kill switch. When your VPN connection drops, this feature will disconnect you from the internet. Similar features are also available for iOS and Android.

ProtonVPN provides additional security features, such as:

• Absolute forward secrecy. It modifies your encryption key each time you connect to ProtonVPN servers. Only one encryption key can be compromised. This affects only the key’s data (and not sessions in the past, future span>).
• Full disk encryption. If a ProtonVPN Server is compromised, disk encryption protects all data.

ProtonVPN supports WireGuard, IKEv2/IPSec, and both Android and iOS. OpenVPN and WireGuard are not supported by the Windows app. It’s faster than IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN, and the top VPNs like TunnelBear and PrivateVPN don’t include WireGuard.

Secure Core

ProtonVPN sends your data through two servers prior to it leaving ProtonVPN. A third party can only trace the connection back to the Secure Core server. ProtonVPN secure core server is located underground in Switzerland, Sweden, and an ex-military bases in Iceland.

Secure Core works the same as double VPN connections. Double VPN connections transmit your data through two servers at random locations. Secure Core routes your traffic through two Secure Core servers. Your speed will slow down naturally when traffic is routed through multiple servers. This is different from when you connect to only one server. When I connected to Secure Core server manually, websites took 5-6 seconds to load. However, Secure Core servers are much faster than most double VPN features. Perfect Privacy’s double VPN connection took 10 seconds on average for websites.

If you are looking to protect your online identity, or if there are high-risk countries that may monitor your internet traffic, this feature is not recommended.

NetShield

NetShield stops trackers, malicious websites, and ads. The websites loaded significantly faster because they didn’t have any ads.

ProtonVPN’s NetShield is a great tool.

ProtonVPN’s most valuable security add-ons is netShield. Although it doesn’t provide full protection against phishing attacks, it does block pop-up advertisements and prevents me from visiting malicious or tracking sites.

Split-Tunneling

Split tunneling allows you to exclude or include web browsers and applications in ProtonVPN. This feature is superior to that of most rivals’ split tunneling features. ExpressVPN cannot redirect apps.

Split tunnelling is supported by ProtonVPN on Android and Windows. This is similar to other VPNs. Split tunnelling would be a great feature for ProtonVPN’s iOS and Mac apps. This isn’t a big deal considering that only a few VPNs offer split tunnelling for Apple users (ExpressVPN supports split tunnelling in macOS 10.15 or lower, and Private Internet Access supports macOS 11 splitting-tunneling),

ProtonVPN’s split-tunneling feature was tested. I connected to a US P2P Server and was able to block my Chrome browser traffic via the VPN tunnel. It was very effective and resulted in faster browsing speeds and torrenting speeds.

ProtonVPN’s split tunnelling function is excellent. It does exactly what is stated, there are no bugs and it’s easy to set-up.

Tor is better than VPN

ProtonVPN supports The Onion Router (or Tor), over VPN at designated servers located in the USA, France and Germany. All traffic will be routed through Tor.

You can surf.onion websites with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). You can surf.onion websites using your browser (Chrome or Firefox, etc.). However, the Tor browser will slow down your internet speed because it encrypts traffic multiple time. It took me more than 15 seconds to load websites.

ProtonVPN’s Tor Over VPN allows you to quickly connect to the Tor network.

ProtonVPN Privacy & Security

ProtonVPN’s headquarters are located in Switzerland. Switzerland has the most stringent data privacy laws.

Switzerland doesn’t have mandatory data retention laws. It is not also part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances. This group of countries has agreed to share intelligence data.

ProtonVPN has a strict policy against logs. ProtonVPN also enforces a strict no-logs policy. This includes your email address for communication, payment details (like partial information) and timestamps for last login attempts. However, this is not an independent audit. Third-party audits have been performed on competitors like ExpressVPN to verify privacy policies. Private Internet Access had its policy tested multiple times and was confirmed in court.

ProtonVPN is an open-source project that I love. They have independently audited every app and found no security issues. ProtonVPN quickly resolved these audits.

ProtonVPN, which is similar to CyberGhost VPN, issues transparency reports that detail all data requests from law enforcement and government agencies. These reports can have large gaps between publication dates. ProtonVPN receives very few requests for user information.

Speed & Performance of ProtonVPN

I ran speed tests using servers in 60+ countries that ProtonVPN offers to determine the average speed of my internet connection. I experienced a 35% decrease in speed, which is more than the average.

ProtonVPN was extremely fast when connecting to local servers. I’m currently in the US. My speed tests weren’t great when I connected to servers in Europe, South America, and Africa. However, I still received good streaming speeds for streaming, streaming and torrenting when I connected to an Australian distant host. While videos and websites took longer time to load, there were minimal delays.

I did a speed test connecting with my local Internet Service Provider to establish a baseline for internet speed.

ProtonVPN provides a fast connection for virtually all online activities. I could stream content and send P2P files without any delays to remote servers.

Some VPNs have more power than others. CyberGhost VPN boasts over 7,000+ servers. Other VPNs have more servers. ExpressVPN has servers across 94 countries. However, I believe ProtonVPN’s server network is sufficient. There are also servers in Central, South America, Africa, and Asia.

ProtonVPN’s physical servers are great. They provide more security than virtual servers that are not in the same country. This provides additional anonymity. However, you will need to search elsewhere for a dedicated IP. ProtonVPN doesn’t offer them. PrivateVPN offers them, as does CyberGhost VPN and Private Internet Access.

ProtonVPN Plus servers are great to stream websites. I was able to stream content from my favorite sites while connected to a Plus server. ProtonVPN connects to Tor via VPN servers in France and the US.

ProtonVPN has a strong network of physical servers as well as dedicated servers for streaming, torrenting, and connecting to Tor.

ProtonVPN claims that it can be used with more than 30 streaming apps.

The guide also contains a step-by–step guide explaining how to access each streaming service. These services are only available to ProtonVPN Plus or Visionary subscribers.

ProtonVPN supports torrenting through its P2P server.

ProtonVPN allows you to access geo-restricted content. It also supports P2P traffic. I was also able to download content from all major torrenting sites.

ProtonVPN bypasses Censorship

ProtonVPN might not be the best option to bypass internet censorship in countries that restrict online access.

It doesn’t have any obfuscation capabilities that can bypass internet blocks in China. There are limited reports that ProtonVPN was able to overcome VPN traffic restrictions in other countries.

ExpressVPN is recommended to those who reside in restricted countries. ExpressVPN provides anonymity across its 3000+ servers.

ProtonVPN offers apps for Android, iOS, Windows, as well as Linux and macOS Linux. It took less than one minute to download it onto my Android phones and iOS phones. It also installed quickly on my Mac and Windows computers.

Android

The Android app by ProtonVPN is excellent. It’s feature-rich, fast and offers great speeds. It’s also very simple to use.

It’s easy to locate a ProtonVPN Server quickly. ProtonVPN shows each server’s load percentage by displaying an orange, yellow, or red dot (low ). ). You can quickly find Tor, Plus and P2P servers simply by tapping the drop-down menu.

ProtonVPN iOS app is nearly identical to the Android version.

Split-tunneling does not work in the iOS app. Split tunneling is supported by ExpressVPN on macOS 10.15 or lower, and Private Internet Access on macOS 10.15 or below. However, the Always on tool can still be used with iOS devices.

ProtonVPN’s iOS app is as good as the Android app. It is user-friendly, and well-designed.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

Windows/Mac apps are very similar to Android and iOS apps.

QuickConnect allows you to connect to any ProtonVPN Server in one click. These steps include authenticating the user and initiating a connection. ProtonVPN assigns you an IP.

Scroll down to see a list all countries. You can also click on a map to select a country. The load percentage is shown with a red circle, yellow and green circles. Plus servers are identified by a “P” located in a nearby square. With arrows pointing in opposite directions, P2P servers can easily be identified by placing arrows on top of each others. The Tor server icons are an onion icon. Both the Windows and Mac apps have many of the same features. There are differences. However, the Windows app has OpenVPN and WireGuard. The Mac app doesn’t have split-tunneling.

Both the Windows and Mac apps are very user-friendly and offer many features and customization options.

ProtonVPN provides a large library of support documents as well as a support form. There is no 24/7 live chat, or telephone number.

The support guides are an excellent source of information. They can be found in six categories: Account, Download & Setup; General Information; Access Content. Troubleshooting. Speed and bandwidth. When I couldn’t find an answer in any of the categories, the search option proved to be very helpful.

ProtonVPN’s support site (which doubles as an email) wasn’t very helpful. ExpressVPN and other competitors offer live chat.

I contacted ProtonVPN by email to request a refund. Within 5 days, my credit card was charged with the money.

ProtonVPN customer service isn’t great, but it’s decent. The email response was very helpful. I also found that the support guides were extremely helpful in answering my most pressing questions.
