ProtonVPN VPN is an excellent VPN which offers great privacy and security. It also features a simple interface that maintained high speeds throughout my speed tests.

ProtonVPN protects your data with an advanced server architecture and 256-bit AES encryption. There is also a strict no logs policy. ProtonVPN has apps that work on all major platforms. You can connect to up to 10 accounts simultaneously.

ProtonVPN Features

ProtonVPN has all the privacy features you need, including:

• AES encryption with 256 bits. Sometimes called “military quality” encryption.
• ProtonVPN has no logs policy. ProtonVPN is not responsible for any online activity.
• Kill Switch. This feature automatically disconnects you from the internet if your VPN connection goes down.

ProtonVPN offers additional security options such as:

• Absolute forward security. This modifies the encryption key that you use to connect to ProtonVPN servers. If only one encryption key is compromised, then it affects the data of that key (and not any session in the future span>).
• Full-disk encryption. Protects all data on a ProtonVPN server in the event of it being compromised.

ProtonVPN can support three protocols: WireGuard (IPsec) and IKEv2/IPSec (Android, iOS, Macs and Windows). OpenVPN and WireGuard do not work in the Windows app. It is faster than IKEv2/IPSec, OpenVPN or OpenVPN. Top VPNs like TunnelBear PrivateVPN and HMA don’t have WireGuard.

Secure Core

ProtonVPN’s Secure Core architecture sends data through two servers before it leaves ProtonVPN. Third parties can only trace back your connection to ProtonVPN’s Secure Core servers. ProtonVPN’s Secure Core servers are underground in Switzerland and Sweden.

Secure Core works exactly the same way that a double VPN connection. Double VPN connections, however, send your data through two servers in random locations. Secure Core routes traffic through 2 Secure Core servers. This is in addition to CyberGhost VPN’s NoSpy servers that route your connection through servers located within the company’s headquarters.

There is a slower speed to your traffic when it is routed through two servers than when you connect to one server. Sites loaded in 5-6 seconds when I connected manually through Secure Core server. But, Secure Core servers are quicker than double VPN features from most competitors. Perfect Privacy’s double VPN connection took on average 10 seconds.

You should not use this feature if you need to protect yourself online or are in high risk countries that might monitor your traffic.

NetShield

NetShield prevents trackers, ads and malicious websites. Because there were no ads, these websites loaded faster and had less clutter.

ProtonVPN’s NetShield tool works great. This tool blocks ads better than Surfshark’s CleanWeb and CyberGhost VPN’s ad blockers (ExpressVPN does not have an adblocker).

ProtonVPN’s most valuable security features is netShield. It doesn’t offer complete protection against Phishing, but it stops all pop-up ads from appearing and stops me visiting malicious or tracking websites.

Split-Tunneling

Split tunneling with ProtonVPN allows you to add or remove web browsers as well as apps. The VPN tunnel can be extended to include IP addresses. This is superior than the split tunneling features offered by competitors (ExpressVPN only allows you to redirect apps).

ProtonVPN supports split-tuning on Android or Windows just like other VPNs. ProtonVPN should add split tunnelling to their iOS or Mac apps. It is not an issue, however, as few VPNs provide this feature for Apple users. Private Internet Access offers split tunnelling with macOS 11 and ExpressVPN does not.

ProtonVPN split tunnelling was tested by me connecting with a US server. It was successful in allowing me to exempt my Chrome browser traffic from the VPN tunnel. It worked well and allowed for faster torrenting and browsing.

ProtonVPN split-tunneling feature is fantastic. It does exactly as it claims, there aren’t any bugs, and it is easy to set it up.

Tor is more secure than VPN

ProtonVPN support The Onion Router (or Tor) over VPN. This is identified with an onion icon beside each server. All traffic will then be routed through Tor.

This allows you surf.onion sites using your browser (Chrome and Firefox, for example). This allows you to surf.onion websites with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). It took me 15 seconds to load websites.

ProtonVPN works in a similar way to CyberGhost VPN. It issues transparency reports which detail all requests for user data (from law enforcement agencies or government agencies) and may have gaps between publication dates. ProtonVPN has received very few requests to access user data.

ProtonVPN has a strict transparency policy that prohibits logging. The company is located in a country with strict data privacy laws. Open-source apps are tested and proven safe.

Speed & Performance at ProtonVPN

To determine an average speed for internet connections, I ran speed testing on servers in 60+ countries where ProtonVPN operates. My average speed drop was 35%, which is much higher than the average.

ProtonVPN was fast with local servers. I’m located in the US. I was able to connect with servers in Europe, South America, and Africa at very high speeds. I also experienced similar results when connecting to an Australian distant server. Although websites and videos took longer to load than videos, delays were minimal.

I used a speed tester to determine my internet speed.

ProtonVPN Quick Connect found the fastest server and connected me to it. I was able to surf the internet, view YouTube videos, and share files fast.

Next, I connected with an Italian ProtonVPN Italian server. It took a significant amount of time for the internet signal to travel to a device from the VPN server. Also, my download speed dropped to only 8%. This is less than my loss when connecting to a US server. I also downloaded large files very quickly.

Finally, I connected to the ProtonVPN server Australia. This is the server that is closest to my location. Although I had the slowest browsing speed, websites took an average of 4-6 seconds for me to load. It took between 15-30 seconds for streaming applications to start playing content. However, all TV shows and movies were available in HD throughout. There was no buffering.

ProtonVPN is fast for almost all online activities. Even though my connection was to servers in the US ProtonVPN offered sufficient speed on remote servers to stream content, share P2P files and make connections with minimal delay.

ProtonVPN makes use of physical servers. They offer greater security than virtual ones that are not located in the same country. This allows you to maintain anonymity and can be used to create a unique IP. ProtonVPN is not able to offer them. PrivateVPN, CyberGhost VPN, Private Internet Access, and Private Internet Access offer them for an additional fee.

ProtonVPN’s plus servers are great for streaming web content. The Plus servers allow you to connect to Tor through VPN servers located in France and the US.

ProtonVPN has the ability to access geo-restricted material and supports P2P. I was also able download content from most of the top torrenting services.

ProtonVPN Overcomes Censorship

ProtonVPN is not the best way to get around internet censorship.

The VPN does not offer obfuscation that allows for bypassing internet blockages in China.

ExpressVPN can be recommended for people who are restricted from traveling. It offers obfuscation on all 3000+ servers.

ProtonVPN FREE can be used on one device with “medium” speeds. ProtonVPN Free is only available on one device. It has medium speeds and can access 3 servers in the USA, Japan, and the Netherlands ).

ProtonVPN’s basic plan costs only D91,360 per monthly. ProtonVPN Basic includes 2 connections, access to 400+ servers from 40+ nations, “high speed” speeds, P2P support, and 10 simultaneous connections. ProtonVPN has apps for Android and iOS as well Linux, macOS Linux and Android TVs. It was easy to install on my Android and iOS phones. I also found it installed quickly on both my Mac and Windows computers.

Android

ProtonVPN’s Android app is great. It has many features and delivers fast speeds. It’s very easy to use.

It is easy to find ProtonVPN servers quickly. ProtonVPN displays the server’s load percentage. Each server is marked with an orange (low), yellow (medium), or red (+high ). ). It is easy to find Tor and Plus P2P servers by simply tapping on the drop-down menu.

Although you can connect to a server via a map, this is not recommended for Android and iOS. It may take you longer to locate the desired point of connection as you will need to zoom in at the most popular servers locations (e.g. Europe span>).

The profile option is a fantastic feature of the app. You can customize your connection preferences. You can choose which country you want to connect and select the fastest server either automatically or manually. Smart Protocol and Secure Core can both be enabled. If the default protocol is not allowed, this will switch you automatically to another protocol.

ProtonVPN’s Android app doesn’t support the kill button. Instead, you can use the ProtonVPN Android app to enable the kill switching. To do so, open the ProtonVPN app for Android and tap on ” block connections with no VPN“. ProtonVPN has detailed instructions in the Settingstab. Android also provides an “Always on” feature which automatically reconnects you to the VPN whenever you disconnect. This option is permanent for iOS users, but Android users need to manually activate it.

ProtonVPN’s Android app is my favorite. It’s simple to use, provides great security features, can be customized, and is customizable.

iOS

ProtonVPN iOS is nearly identical to its Android counterpart.

Split-tunneling cannot be found in the iOS App. ExpressVPN supports split tunneling for macOS 10.15 and below, while Private Internet Access supports it on all macOS versions. However, the Always On tool can be permanently turned on with iOS devices.

ProtonVPN’s iOS application is just like its Android app. It’s well-designed and user-friendly.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

Windows/Mac applications look very similar with the iOS and Android apps.

QuickConnect lets you connect to any ProtonVPN servers in one click. The process includes authenticating and initializing the connection. ProtonVPN also assigns an IP to you.

Scroll down to the Country tab to view a complete list of countries. To view a list of countries, click on the Country tab. ProtonVPN makes finding special servers easy by indicating the load percentage with a yellow, green, and red circle. Plus servers have a “P” located in the square adjacent to them. You can identify P2P servers by placing arrows in opposite directions on top of one another. Tor servers are identified by an onion icon. The Windows and Mac versions share many of these features. However, there are some differences. While the Windows app includes OpenVPN and WireGuard, the Mac app does NOT have split tunnelling.

Both Windows and Mac apps have a wide range of features and a lot of customization options. They are also extremely user-friendly.

ProtonVPN Apps Are Easy to Use

The ProtonVPN app is very simple to use

All of the apps for Android and iOS have identical interfaces. Each app has many of the same features. ProtonVPN’s settingstab provides easy instructions. You can also use the Always On feature to instantly reconnect to your ProtonVPN Server if you lose connectivity to the iOS app. Windows only supports OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols. IKEv2 can be supported on other operating systems.

Support for ProtonVPN customers

ProtonVPN has a wide range of support documents, as well as a support request form. Unfortunately, ProtonVPN does not offer a 24/7 live chat service or a telephone number.

Support guides are a great resource of information. There are 6 categories: Account; Download and setup; General Information, Access Content; Troubleshooting; Speed & bandwidth. If I couldn’t find the answer within one of these categories, the search option was helpful.

ProtonVPN support page, which doubles up as an e-mail, was not very helpful. ExpressVPN is also offering live chat.

To request my refund, I contacted ProtonVPN through email. The process was simple and the money was added to credit card within 5 days.

ProtonVPN’s performance is not perfect. ProtonVPN can’t bypass China’s internet restrictions. This disappointed me. ExpressVPN is available in China and offers 24/7 live chat. ProtonVPN Tier Based Subscription Plans are too expensive for the best features. Many competitors don’t limit users in this way.
