Heimdal offers decent protection for Windows, macOS, and Android. There are some issues. It isn’t a great value compared to premium antivirus software like Bitdefender or Norton, which offer better security features at a lower price.

My testing revealed that Heimdal’s malware scanner detected 98% of the malware I tested. Heimdal’s system speed was very good during scans. In full system scans, the scanner crashed multiple times. This is an unacceptable situation and should be avoided.

Heimdal also offers the following features:

Heimdal firewall and deep packet inspection offer excellent network protection. They can prevent sophisticated threats like exploit attacks, man in the middle attacks (MITM), ransomware and more.

Heimdal’s antivirus software lacks many of the essential security features. It is also half the price of other antivirus products.

Heimdal was successful in real-time threat protection testing and malware scanning. This is what makes Heimdal unique. Heimdal’s price is too high for me.

Bitdefender and Norton are both competitors. They offer superior malware protection, a VPN, cloud backup and parental controls for a fraction the price of Heimdal.

Heimdal offers three home plans. Every plan comes with a 30-day guarantee of your satisfaction.

Heimdal Security Features

Malware scanning

Heimdal’s antimalware scanner works well when it is working. During testing, however, it crashed several times on my gaming system. It didn’t crash any other devices, however. Bitdefender and Avira both have advanced antivirus scanners that are similar to Bitdefender. They were able to scan all of my devices without any issues.

Heimdal’s scanner, real-time protection, and crash detection are fast, efficient, lightweight and highly effective. My tests revealed that my devices could be used as normal during scans. I was able to use Google Docs and Google Sheets, surf on the internet and play video games on my Windows 10 laptop. My Android smartphone was fast enough to watch a Netflix movie.

Heimdal offers more scan options than most antiviruses. It provides:

While this may seem confusing, most users will stick with the quick scan (to find infected files such as downloads or temporary files) and the full scan (to scan all of the system).

Heimdal’s 8 scan options may be useful for some users. However, Heimdal should offer a custom scan option that allows users the ability to select specific files and drives to scan. Bitdefender’s custom scans are faster and more complete than Heimdal and offer the same functionality.

I downloaded nearly 1000 malware files to test Heimdal Antivirus. I used trojans, viruses, and ransomware. It detected 98% of malware samples when it worked.

Heimdal would stop scanning a file after three hours, even though it was a full scan. Heimdal doesn’t allow you to exclude files from scans. I was unable to scan my primary computer. Even after trying to email Heimdal’s support, the issue was still not solved. This is a serious issue, as an antivirus program must run a complete scan. Norton, McAfee, and Bitdefender offer great full scans that quickly scan large drives without any problems.

Heimdal completed the full scan in under an hour using a 200GB hard drive on my laptop.

My testing showed that Heimdal’s quick scan took between 8-10 minutes and 10 minutes. This is significantly more than the scans done by TotalAV or Avira, which typically take 3 to 5 minutes.

You can easily schedule Heimdal’s 8 scans monthly or weekly. Each scan can be given a custom name and/or note.

Heimdal needs a better scanning report system. After a scan is completed, you cannot view any details.

Norton offers detailed scan results, including the resolution and number of threats as well as the date/time of each scan.

Heimdal’s malware scanner was very efficient in detecting viruses and showed minimal downtime when tested on a smaller computer. Heimdal Antivirus doesn’t offer a customized scan option and my testing with it on a smaller laptop revealed very little system downtime.

Firewall

The Heimdal firewall doesn’t do anything special, but it is a user interface for the built-in firewall on all Windows devices. Heimdal integrates well with Windows. However, I didn’t notice any improvements in the effectiveness of my Windows firewall after installing Heimdal.

Heimdal makes it easier than the Windows interface to add rules to your firewall. This allows you to permit a specific program through your firewall, or to create rules for certain network ports.

While Heimdal is more powerful than Windows, Heimdal’s rule setting process isn’t as simple as Windows. You must navigate manually to the path to add a program to your computer instead of selecting it from a list such as Norton or McAfee. Heimdal’s customization layer works well for more experienced users, but it can be overwhelming for beginners or less tech-savvy users.

Heimdal’s firewall was not impressive to me. More advanced users may enjoy Heimdal’s rule-setting capabilities.

Deep Packet Inspection

Although Heimdal’s deep packet inspection service is very effective, the name is difficult to comprehend. Deep packet inspection is a method that analyzes all data transmitted over your network and detects suspicious activity.

Heimdal’s deep packet inspection service analyzes all outgoing, inbound and future DNS (Domain Name System), HTTP (Hypertext Trans Protocol), HTTPS(Hypertext Transport Protocol Secure) traffic using machine-learning technology. Heimdal is able to detect rootkits and other malware communicating with users outside your network.

Heimdal segregates its deep-pack inspection services into two tools

• DarkLayer Guard. DarkLayer Guard.
• VectorN Detection. Machine-learning technology is used to search for patterns and monitor DarkLayer Guard connections.

DarkLayer Guard can be combined with VectorN Detection to create a “next generation firewall”. This feature is common in premium antivirus software. Both Bitdefender and Norton use similar technology in their firewalls.

Heimdal’s deep packet inspection system is broken into two sections. They are listed separately from the firewall. The confusing names, which is a major blow to the software’s useability – DarkLayer Guardian & VectorN detection seem deliberately vague and hard to understand

Heimdal’s deep packet inspection service works very well. I was able simulate 23 scenarios, and Heimdal was capable of blocking them all. Windows Defender blocked 19 of the 23 scenarios. Windows Defender was able to block 19.

DarkLayer Guard makes it easy to whitelist specific files or processes. Simply add the file, process, or site to a marked box. This could be integrated into firewall’s rules system. Heimdal shouldn’t have to add a rule to the firewall or to the DarkLayer Guards whitelist every time Heimdal blocks something. It is much easier than competing products like McAfee or BullGuard to add firewall rules.

Heimdal’s deep packet inspection service is very effective at detecting malware files in real-time. It is not intuitively designed. It also returned a lot of false positives during testing. Its machine learning and TTPC capabilities make it a great feature for people who want their devices and networks to be as secure as possible.

X-ploit Resilience

Xploit Resistance is an add-on which automatically updates and patches most software. It’s free and very useful. McAfee, Avira and Avira provide vulnerability scanners that flag obsolete software. Heimdal is also an option for automatic software updates.

Heimdal scans your system for any software after you have closed X-ploit Resist. You have the option to auto-update or monitor any program.

It takes time to use Xploit Resilience — I spent almost an hour patching six programs on my computer with Xploit. This is still a very useful feature, especially for people who don’t like keeping their programs updated.

I was also impressed by the large list of software Xploit Resistance can work with. It was a pleasant surprise that the tool could recognize and update some of my niche programs like Wireshark and Tortoise SVN as well as more common programs such Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Xploit Recovery offers a variety of software you can use as well as more specialized software. All of them can be downloaded in one click. This is just like Xploit Resilience’s automatic update and it is discreet.

Xploit Resilience, while a wonderful feature, Heimdal needs to add more device optimization features. You could have a startup manager or a disk optimizer. A way to see computer resources. All these features and updates are available in Avira Prim’s paid plans.

Overall, Xploit Resilience has many great features. It is easy to use, can automatically update hundreds of programs, and even offers a free download to those who wish to increase their cybersecurity protections.

Gaming Mode

Heimdal’s gaming feature is a basic feature that prevents security scans and antivirus notifications from interfering with gaming or other CPU-intensive activities. The Gaming Mode tab of Heimdal’s General Setting can be accessed. Heimdal won’t perform scans on you or send security notifications if the gaming mode has been enabled. It will instead provide basic, real-time protection.

Heimdal has made this a great addition to its antivirus. It was just a little difficult to find. It was tedious to have Heimdal’s settings open each time I wanted to open a game, especially as most McAfee or Norton games launch automatically when you enter fullscreen mode.

Gaming mode will disable notifications, but it won’t increase your computer’s performance. There are better anti-viruses that can improve framerate and gaming performance. (Norton is my favorite anti-virus for gaming in 2022).

Heimdal’s gaming mode is a great tool for people who don’t want their antivirus to affect their games.

Prices and Plans for Heimdal Antivirus

Heimdal offers three premium plans for home users. All three allow you to install Heimdal up to 10 times (Windows and macOS), as well as Android ).

Heimdal Next-Gen Antivirus Home provides solid antivirus protection, but does not offer Threat Prevention Home’s deep pack inspection or software updates. Heimdal Next Generation Antivirus has the following features:

This plan is designed for users who require a reliable malware scanner program but don’t need Heimdal to offer advanced network security features. Malwarebytes or Bitdefender offer lower-cost antivirus plans. Heimdal Next Generation Antivirus is priced at D800,680 per annum and is not a good value. Avira Internet Security Free, a more affordable and simple antivirus solution, is better. It is also completely free.

Heimdal’s antimalware scanner scored highly in my testing. It also comes with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

Heimdal Premium Security Homes — Best Value

Heimdal premium security home comes with all the features of the previous plans, and costs D800680/year. Avira and TotalAV have additional features such as password managers, identity protection, and VPN protection.

This plan is the most economical. This plan is the most affordable.

Heimdal Setup and Use Ease

In less than three minutes, Heimdal Antivirus was installed on all of my devices. It was easy to follow. The settings menus are confusing and Heimdal features may not be available by default.

Heimdal can be downloaded on Android, Mac, and PC. You can also get it in these languages.

The default settings for Heimdal are generally good. Most of Heimdal’s proactive security features are activated automatically. So you are pretty safe from the moment Heimdal is installed on your device.

By default, Xploit Resilience software upgrades are disabled. This includes the removable drive scanning, real-time archive scanning, and real-time network scanning that the antivirus scanner uses.

Heimdal should make these options available by default in the future. Heimdal’s online assistance system was helpful in locating how to activate security features.

It is easy to use and well-designed. The program includes tools like deep packet inspection, antivirus scanner and firewall, as well as software update features.

The navigation around the application is relatively straightforward, but it can also get confusing Heimdal’s “Quick Settings” and “General Settings” menus can sometimes be confusing, since they often contain identical content.

Heimdal is an easy-to-use anti-virus. However, it only offers four security features. Avira and TotalAV are similar but offer a lot more functionality. I was disappointed Heimdal’s security features weren’t disabled by default. However, Heimdal was intuitive and simple to use.

• Malware scanning.
• Deep packet inspection.
• VPN, but it doesn’t work.

Heimdal’s Android malware scanner is fast and simple to use. It works well. Heimdal detected 95% of the nearly 400 Android-specific malware files that I downloaded. This is quite impressive. Although it isn’t as impressive as Norton’s 100% Android malware detection rate this is still very impressive.

DarkLayer Guard is Heimdal’s deep packet inspection service. It also works well. It works in the background, even when the app is closed. It detected all network spoofing attacks and MITM attacks I tested. This impressed me.

Users are misled by the app into thinking that DarkLayer Guard (a virtual privacy network) is a VPN. VPNs replace your IP address with one from another location or country, which allows you to surf the web anonymously and securely.

DarkLayer Guard is however not a VPN. DarkLayer Guard acts instead as a firewall to block malicious connections. Heimdal’s VPN does not allow you to connect to another server. Heimdal claims it has a VPN but it does not.

Many antiviruses offer a VPN for Windows or Mac. Many antiviruses offer it for iOS. Avira and TotalAV offer excellent VPNs as part of their premium antivirus plans. These VPNs are excellent for mobile use and can be found from standalone providers like ExpressVPN or ProtonVPN.

Thor Safety’s design and feel is not as professional or polished as Heimdal’s desktop app. Heimdal should include anti-theft features within Thor Mobile Safety. Remote locking, remote alarm and GPS tracking can all be included. Norton, Bitdefender, and other professional-looking Android applications offer many more features, including anti-theft protocols.

Thor Mobile Safety is an excellent mobile anti-malware tool. However, there are better Android antiviruses in 2022. Heimdal needs to add useful features to its Android app to make it better than its desktop software.

Support for Heimdal Customers

Heimdal’s customer support is fast and efficient. But, I wish there was more channels.

• Email support.
• Online knowledge database.

Heimdal doesn’t offer any live chat, phone support, or forum. McAfee and Bitdefender offer fast support via chat or phone in many languages. This is much faster than waiting for a reply by email or poring through an online knowledgebase.

You can access Heimdal’s website knowledge base and email support via the Android app or the desktop. You will also find many tutorials and articles. There is also a cybersecurity glossary and frequently-asked questions section. An email course is available that teaches cybersecurity basics to beginners.

Heimdal’s cybersecurity glossary did not include Heimdal’s proprietary terms, which surprised me. DarkLayer Guard and VectorN Detection are some of the terms Heimdal’s cybersecurity glossary does not include.

Plus, Heimdal’s email support was among the best I have ever experienced. Heimdal was quick to respond to my support tickets. It was often within one hour. This is an extremely fast response time for antivirus email support services. BullGuard may take up to one day to respond to support inquiries.

The customer service options at Heimdal are exceptional. Heimdal’s customer service options are excellent, but it is a pity that they don’t offer phone support, live chat, or forums like other companies.

Does Heimdal make a good investment?

Heimdal, an antivirus scanner that provides network security tools for Windows and Macs, is very good. It’s not as user-friendly and robust as premium brands such as Bitdefender or Norton.

Heimdal’s antivirus scanner detected 98% malware files in my testing. This is an amazing score. It detected malware like exploit attacks, man in the middle attacks and ransomware. During full disk scans, Heimdal crashed on several occasions on my gaming system. This file was not whitelisted by me.

Heimdal includes advanced packet inspection, firewall, and an automatic software updater.

The Xploit Resilience software updater tool is a favorite of mine. It’s easy to use and can detect sophisticated network attacks. Heimdal is missing some other useful features. Avira, Norton and others are also competitors in this field. They provide password managers, VPNs, system tune-up tools and web shields, among other useful extras.

All 3 Heimdal antivirus packages can be subscribed to for either 1 or 2 year, as well as up to 10 devices. Heimdal is more expensive than McAfee or Bitdefender, but the 3-year subscriptions can be purchased for a much lower price.

Heimdal is an excellent anti-malware product. It is also easy to use and provides a firewall. There are many antivirus companies that offer more features at a cheaper price or comparable prices.

Does Heimdal include a mobile app?

This is true, but it’s only available to Android users. It provides malware scanning and network traffic scans, but Heimdal’s Android app misleads users into thinking that DarkLayer Guard VPN is available.

What does Heimdal Thor agent mean?

Thor Agent is Heimdal’s anti-virus software. Heimdal Thor Agentincludes real time malware detection and antivirus scanning. It did a great job in my testing, except for the fact that it crashed several times when scanning my gaming PC.

Heimdal’s security program has many confusing terms, such as Xploit Resilience or DarkLayer Guard. I’m not the only one who finds it confusing. It was also surprising to me that Heimdal’s online knowledgebase doesn’t accurately label its features.

Does Heimdal include a VPN?

Heimdal doesn’t claim DarkLayer Guard Android, its advanced network monitoring tool DarkLayer Guard is a VPN. It is however unable to perform basic VPN functions such as connecting to servers around the world, replacing your IP address, and encrypting all your internet traffic. Avira and TotalAV are the best VPN antiviruses.
