This is a powerful, instant antivirus and malware protection tool. It also offers a wide variety of security and optimization features, such as ID theft protection and adware monitoring.

MacKeeper is more expensive than most of its competitors, but it offers flexible pricing plans. All plans come with a 14-day money back guarantee.

MacKeeper Antivirus Security features

Antivirus Scanner

There is no quick scan option. You can scan specific files with a custom scan. After downloading the software, I ran a complete scan. It took just 50 minutes. It ran faster than other antivirus scanners, such as Airo AV and Intego for Mac, and found no threats. It didn’t show how many files were being scan, so I don’t know if my whole system was actually being scanned.

A folder with Mac malware samples was also downloaded as part of my testing. This contained viruses, spyware, ransomware, and other malicious software. MacKeeper’s antivirus scanner detected more than 99% of the malware samples I downloaded.

The prompt will ask me whether to delete or quarantine the files. This helpful feature displays a list of potentially dangerous files and lets you choose to mark them safe or delete.

It became clear that scan times were not getting faster after running multiple scans. MacKeeper does not use file cache to skip files that have been scanned, thereby reducing scan times. MacKeeper scans are quicker than any other antivirus software. They didn’t slow down your device.

The first time the anti-virus scanner is run, you will be asked to activate real time protection. Although I don’t know why this feature is not automatically enabled, it is important. Real-time protection is easy to activate and almost impossible for anyone to overlook. It will remain on until you manually remove it.

MacKeeper’s antivirus scanner is constantly running in the background scanning for malware every time you attempt to download it. I was alerted and prompted to put the files in quarantine.

MacKeeper’s antivirus scanner impressed me. It would be helpful to know the number of files that were scanned each time. It is also disappointing that the scanner doesn’t use file caching like Intego to speed-up future scans. MacKeeper’s malware detection score of 98.6% is my top priority.

Adware Cleaner

Adware Cleaner detects, removes, and monitors your Mac for new adware. This scanner is rare. Although most antivirus products include adware cleaners they are often integrated into the main antimalware engine. Avira and TotalAV are two of the top antivirus products. They offer some of the best anti-malware tools available. MacKeeper, although it is the most prominent anti-malware software, can also detect adware.

The Adware Cleaner took just 5 minutes to scan my Mac. Many of these adware viruses have been around for many years. Many pieces of malware were linked to gaming sites because the original owner was an avid player. It was simple to delete the adware from my computer after the scan was completed.

Adware Cleaner didn’t automatically enable the real-time adware monitoring function, so I had it activated every time I ran Adware Cleaner. It might be sensible for real-time to not be enabled by default, but it is easy to set it up.

Adware cleaner is a great product. It is simple to use and very quick. It’s safe to rest assured that my computer is not being spammed with unwanted ads or malicious adware.

ID Theft Guard

ID theft Guardian is a powerful tool to protect you against identity theft.

This is what makes MacKeeper unique. Norton’s dark web monitoring, which uses human agents to track personal identifiable information, isn’t as comprehensive. Intego is the most popular antivirus software for Macs. Bitdefender, TotalAV, and TotalAV do not offer dark-web monitoring. MacKeeper’s ID Theft Guard has more features than other products.

When you first use the ID Theft Guard, all email addresses associated to your device will be automatically identified. First, you will need to review all email addresses. Next, choose the ones that should be checked for potential breaches.

ID Theft Guard found 8 email addresses associated with my Mac. Even though many of them were not in use and out-of-date, it was helpful to check if they had been compromised. Oddly enough, ID Theft Guard initially reported that there had been no breaches, but then, a pop-up alerted me to five data breaches involving one my email addresses just 5 minutes later.

I was impressed with this feature, despite the 5-minute delay.

ID Theft Guard asked that I verify who my identity is using a security code sent to my email.

The exact details of each breach were then given to me. This included information such as the name of the breached company and details about the breach. I was also able to view the password I used.

MacKeeper provides a link to take you to the website where your password can be changed. You can also manually change your password. After you have resolved the issue, click Resolution to ensure it doesn’t show up on your dashboard as security concern.

In my case, the breached company “Sensitive” was listed. MacKeeper claims that this is for legal reasons. The ongoing investigation into breaches would be compromised if the source is revealed. You can still view the password, so if you are familiar with it, you might be able to modify it manually.

Overall, I believe ID Theft Guard is a fantastic feature. Although it doesn’t offer the same level of protection as Norton’s dark Web monitoring it is still an excellent option over other antivirus products. It is easy to use and manage. MacKeeper protected my personal data, which made me feel a lot more secure.

VPN Private Connect

Private Connect is MacKeeper’s new integrated VPN service. A VPN is not included in most antivirus products. Even those with limitations can be very inconvenient.

Privacy Connect works in the same way as all VPNs. It hides your IP address, encrypts sensitive data and protects against hackers.

MacKeeper VPN is a very impressive VPN that comes with antivirus products. These are its key features:

• Military-grade AES encryption of 256 bits.
• DNS leak prevention and webRTC.
• Large server networks: 300+ locations spread across 50+ nations.
• HTML4_ P2PTorrenting from some servers.

TotalAV is my only VPN that comes with antivirus. It supports torrenting and unlimited data, and works exactly as it says. Bitdefender’s VPN works well. You must upgrade to get unlimited data. McAfee and Norton VPNs offer unlimited data, but they do not permit torrenting and can only allow basic browsing.

My tests were very positive about MacKeeper VPN’s speed. The download speed for the “Best Available” server was around 20%. This speed is comparable to standalone brands such as ExpressVPN and ProtonVPN.

Although upload speeds dropped slightly when I connected via a USA server, (I live in Spain), they were still very quick.

My connection speeds to Australia’s servers were slower than those in my area. However, web pages loaded in seconds to my location and I was able to stream a movie online with no buffering. The video quality was not as good as I expected.

MacKeeper’s VPN allows you to access streaming sites without any problems. This is something other VPNs can’t do. Avira VPN does not work with Netflix. Other standalone VPNs like Mullvad VPN are not good options for streaming.

The only thing that worries me about MacKeeper VPN security is the fact that I was unable to discover how they manage user data.

The VPN is also third-party, which makes it less secure. ExpressVPN is the best standalone VPN product if you want to be secure.

It works just like other MacKeeper features. It can be turned on or off manually, or it can connect automatically whenever your Mac starts.

Although the policy doesn’t allow for transparency, MacKeeper’s VPN was excellent. It is reliable, fast, and offers unlimited data. This VPN works with streaming sites and provides buffer-free streaming. It is an excellent option for anyone who wants to protect their computer.

StopAd

As the name suggests, StopAd blocks ads. It prevents trackers and ads from following your online activities.

MacKeeper also has this extra feature. Norton’s mobile apps don’t come with an ad blocker. Bitdefender and McAfee (Intego), don’t.

MacKeeper’s browser extension is the ad-blocker. You must activate it for Safari and Google Chrome. Simply click Enable. MacKeeper will open the page immediately. You can then install browser extensions with just one click.

Once you have opened a new page, the browser extension can automatically be activated. When the browser extension is active, this feature will automatically run in the background. To view more information about StopAD’s blocking, click the icon in your menu.

YouTube was the first to test this feature. While I was browsing the internet, it blocked 3 ads and 4 trackers as well as one video. It was quite surprising to see how many websites wanted every movement to be tracked. It was also possible for me to see which websites blocked my ads and tracked me. This was very interesting.

Overall, I love StopAd. It’s simple to use and has a clear design.

Safe Cleaning

Safe Cleanup inspects your entire Mac for “junk” files. This includes logs and caches, junk, junk, items in trash, items in the garbage, unutilized languages files, attachments to emails, and items that are not being used.

Many antivirus programs include tools that allow you to safely delete junk files. MacKeeper is unique in that it includes attachments within its cleaner tool.

MacKeeper’s Junk File Remover is quick and easy to use. Safe Cleanup found 7.67GB worth of junk files on Macs within a matter of minutes. This is something I don’t do nearly as often.

It is difficult to use this feature as there is no prompt to ask you to review these files before clicking Clean. Click on the category to see all files. Then, you can select the ones that you don’t need and click Clean Junk Files.

Only one category, “Trash”, will give you a warning before you delete any files. Once you hit Clean, all files in the other categories will be deleted.

Apple Mail is my preferred email management app. If I hadn’t done that, I could have lost all the mail attachments in my folders by hitting that button. These could still be accessed through my email provider’s app, but that would be very inconvenient for me. It’s important that each category is clearly explained and the consequences of hitting delete.

Safe Cleaning is a great tool to delete unnecessary files from your hard disk.

Duplicate Finder

The Duplicates Locator scans the computer for duplicate files, images and screenshots.

It took just two minutes to scan all files. 504 files were found that took up 445MB of space. Duplicates Finder differs from Safe Cleanup. Before deleting files, it will prompt you to review all files. By default, duplicate files will be deleted. You can click on any category to zoom in and see the details of each file.

Duplicates Finder does require manual effort. Sometimes you might want multiple copies of the exact same file. You can do this by looking at all files and clicking on Remove Selected. Screenshots and Similar Pictures categories do not have default selections, so manual inspection is required. MacKeeper will suggest the “best” photo from all similar photos.

This feature is excellent overall. It is very well designed, with clear instructions and easy use.

Smart Uninstaller

The Smart Uninstaller scans your Mac for unneeded apps, widgets, or plugins.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to remove apps from macOS devices. They can be moved to your trash, but not all of them. It will only remove specific components. Smart Uninstaller solves this problem by completely uninstalling all program components and files.

This feature is not usually found in performance optimizers that come with antivirus products. This feature is available in MacKeeper. TotalAV doesn’t include an uninstaller. McAfee and Intego have it.

It took less than 2 minutes to scan the computer. The scan revealed that I had 24 GB of unopened plugins, browser extensions, apps, and other leftovers. To view the details of each category, click on it and choose what you want to delete. Only the remaining items can be deleted.

Apps are automatically sorted according to their use. This makes it easy to delete apps. Other apps will also be sorted according to their size.

Although this feature is extremely useful, the How to Use Smart Uninstaller guide from MacKeeper clearly states that it is not recommended to delete macOS default apps such as Quick Look and Spotlight. It is not clearly displayed in the app. You might think that this is an alert to let you know if you wish to delete them. It was not something I wanted to be tested. This warning would not be displayed by MacKeeper. You can click Remove Selected to ensure that you don’t accidentally or unintentionally delete any important data.

Smart Uninstaller is an excellent feature. It is easy to locate and remove unwanted plugins or extensions. However, I would like more information from the app on what to delete or which applications to uninstall.

Memory Cleaner

Memory Clearer lets you view how RAM (random access memory on your Mac) has been used. To improve your overall performance, you can free up RAM.

When I tested it, it took up 7.9GB of my 8GB RAM memory and only 22.7MB of the available memory. However, this number can fluctuate rapidly and can change as fast as 100MB in a matter of seconds.

You will find the details about how memory is being used in the Memory Usage section. To clear the memory, click Cleaning Memory. This process cleared approximately 3GB of memory. Within minutes, the available memory had returned to its initial levels. This was a bad idea.

View a complete list all apps using the most RAM on the Apps and Processes screen. This prevents you from accidentally closing an app that is extremely important to your computer.

It was confusing to see that many greyed out processes and apps could be very critical, but they can still remain open. This is especially true considering MacKeeper’s warning about closing certain programs. The How To Use Memory Cleanerblog makes this clear, but it is not in the app. It would be great to have more information within the app interface about what users should look out for.

MacKeeper was the application that required the most RAM. I found this surprising considering it promised to improve the performance of my macOS device. Airo AV is a lightweight program that doesn’t use as much memory. But, it is still a great choice for those with more RAM.

Memory Cleaner is not appealing to me. Clearing out memory didn’t make any difference to my Mac’s performance. In the unlikely event that my Mac was damaged, I didn’t want to close all of the processes. My available memory returned to the state it was before I cleaned it. This feature doesn’t offer a long-term, stable solution to optimizing RAM usage.

Additional Features

MacKeeper includes Login Items, Find & Fix, and Update Tracker.

• Update Tracker

Update Tracker scans your device for any applications that may need to be updated and determines whether they do.

Update Tracker identified five programs that required updating on my device. After checking the App store, I found that MacKeeper didn’t detect that my Spotify app had become outdated. MacOS also needed security updates. MacKeeper was able to identify all updates that were required by macOS software.

• Login Items

Login items can speed up the startup time of your Mac by reviewing all applications that were loaded when it was first started. Intego does not offer a manager for start ups so MacKeeper was welcomed.

The Login Items scan found 18 items that launch when I open my device. MacKeeper was responsible for seven of them! Ironically, the app that was intended to speed up my Mac’s performance is also the fastest.

I decided to delete three of the suggested login details (some are mandatory and cannot be removed). Although it didn’t speed up my Mac’s startup, I did not notice any improvements in its startup times.

• Find & Fix

MacKeeper offers a Find &Fix function that allows you to quickly scan and analyze all MacKeeper features.

This scan highlights threats and shows the main MacKeeper categories.

• Performance.

The Find & Fix scan takes only minutes. This scan allows you to quickly identify and fix any security or performance issues that may be affecting your Macs.

You have two options on the main screen displaying Find & Fix scan result: you can click View for a detailed view of each section and then make any edits you desire. You can also click Fix Items Securely to allow MacKeeper to automatically “fix” any items found.

The Find & Fix feature is my favorite. It is a great tool to quickly assess your device’s security or optimization status. You can also “Fix Items Safely!” I don’t like the “Fix Items Safely!” button. It is designed in a way that it can be clicked and all changes are applied instantly, without you even having the chance to look at them.

MacKeeper could have more useful features, I wish. Intego offers anti-phishing protection, parental controls, and a firewall. These features are more valuable to me than MacKeeper. These features are standard in Norton, McAfee and TotalAV.

The other features of MacKeeper are amazing. I was honest and expected a bit more from the Login Items, Update Tracker and Find & Fix functions. They were not detrimental to my Mac’s security or performance.

MacKeeper Plans & Prices

MacKeeper offers three pricing options. For 1 device, there are both 1-month and 12-month plans. A 12-month plan is available for 3 devices. You can upgrade to Premium Services Support Plan after you have signed up for the standard service plan.

Standard plans have the same features – the 12-month plan has no missing features compared to the one-month. All features are included in all plans, including the unlimited data VPN and StopAd. They are also available at an additional cost or as part of a higher-rate plan.

MacKeeper is expensive, but it’s worth it. MacKeeper is packed with features that work well. You can still find comparable products for a fraction of the cost and that perform as well or better.

All standard plans come with a MacKeeper 14-day guarantee. This guarantee is less than the industry-standard 30-days offered by McAfee TotalAV, Intego and Intego. MacKeeper offers a free version, which Intego also provides. However, the features are very limited and you will be continually asked to subscribe in order to resolve the issues.

MacKeeper also offers premium tech support services in addition to the standard plan. Tech experts will be available to you 24/7 to assist with any tech problems. Prices are only available upon request. They may vary depending on how you negotiate. The initial price I was offered was $500 per year. This gave me all of the information I needed. It is not something that most people consider to be worth their time.

MacKeeper is a good value for the price. Intego, however, is Mac-dedicated and comes at a similar price. It also has important security features that MacKeeper does not have, such as anti-phishing or firewall. Avira and Norton are industry leaders in macOS products, which are considerably cheaper than MacKeeper. They also offer more features. If you are looking for simplicity and functionality, MacKeeper is a good option.

MacKeeper is easy to use and set up

MacKeeper is easy to set up. It took only 2 minutes to download MacKeeper software and install it.

If the software has been downloaded, you will be asked to wp-signup.php from the app. If you prefer to subscribe via the internet, however, you will need to first download the software and then enter the activation code that will be sent to your email.

Once activated, all features can be used immediately. You will need to turn on some features, such as real-time surveillance or protection. You will be prompted to do so on the appropriate screens. It takes only a few clicks.

MacKeeper’s interface is very intuitive. It’s easy to use and takes up the whole screen. It is located at the right side of your screen. You can minimize it when not in use.

Every feature is very easy to use

The interface lacks explanations for certain features. This is my only criticism. A few question mark symbols would link to more information about potentially dangerous or irreversible actions. Intego provides description overlays for each of its apps that detail each function. This is a great tool for beginners.

MacKeeper did a great job designing an intuitive package that is easy to use. It makes it easy to manage your Mac’s security and optimization.

MacKeeper Mobile App

MacKeeper is only compatible with macOS. Norton, Bitdefender and TotalAV are good choices if you want an antivirus program that will work on all your devices.

MacKeeper offers many customer support options.

MacKeeper used to be able provide phone support. A livechat agent informed me that all their incoming calls were cut off due to the pandemic. They assured me, however, that their online customer service was unaffected by the pandemic.

Chat Live

You can find the live chat on the right-hand sidebar. The live chat can also be found integrated into the dashboard. It can be found on the right-hand side of the app interface.

I tried live chat twice from the app and the website. They were friendly and prompt in responding to my questions. Although they couldn’t answer all my questions, they suggested that I send an email and provided the correct email addresses.

Pre-written messages were sometimes placed in my chat conversations on a few occasions. These messages were meant to convince me to upgrade to premium service, or extend my subscription while I tried to cancel. They never tried to push me but always responded to my objections.

MacKeeper offers its software in more than 20 languages. Unfortunately, chat support is only available in English. Chat informed me that email support would be available in other languages. I haven’t tried this but I don’t know how fast they will respond.
