PC Matic is not a good choice for the top antivirus programs of 2022. It is a decent and affordable antivirus that offers good protection against malware.

PC Matic can be used as a good antivirus. It is easy to set-up and use.

Although PC Matic may not have the same advanced features as McAfee and Norton, it is very affordable and does the basics well. It also offers a lifetime subscription.

PC Matic Security Features

PC Matic’s malware scanner uses whitelisting in order to block malicious software. PC Matic’s malware scanner uses whitelisting to block malicious programs. It has a list of “good” programs and blocks those that aren’t.

If a program doesn’t appear on PC Matic’s list, it is automatically sent to the company’s test team. It is placed on the whitelist if it is safe. If you don’t want the team of PC Matic to test it, you can manually whitelist it.

PC Matic claims that blacklisting programs doesn’t work because hackers are constantly coming up with new threats. It’s much easier to keep track and update good programs than to keep up with new malware.

This approach sounds great, but it has two problems:

This applies regardless of whether or not it poses a threat to users. Although PC Matic can whitelist unknown programs and can look into them, it can sometimes lead to annoying false positives.

2. PC Matic loves to claim that other antiviruses use blacklists to stop malware. Although antivirus programs do use blacklists to protect themselves, they also employ advanced methods to detect malicious behavior. Antiviruses such as Norton, Bitdefender and BullGuard that are premium include malware databases, artificial intelligence and machine learning. They can identify and block advanced threats and emerging threats.

PC Matic has a feature to detect malicious scripting activity. This malware, unlike a.exe file, does not need to be downloaded. It provides protection against brute force attacks. This is when hackers attempt to guess passwords or logins of users.

PC Matic’s approach for malware detection isn’t terrible, but it’s not great. I would like to see PC Matic develop a better way to distinguish safe, unknown programs and dangerous, unknown threats. But, false positives are better than false negatives for antivirus programs. PC Matic’s method is effective, and it worked well in my tests.

PC Matic Comprehensive System Scan

PC Matic scans your devices for a variety of issues.

It took just two minutes to scan PC Matic, which was quite remarkable. The report showed that PC Matic didn’t actually perform malware scanning.

This was very strange to me. First, malware scanning is included in the default scan settings. PC Matic recommends that malware scanning be checked.

Second, I appreciated that PC Matic checked my computer for a variety of issues. When I test an antivirus program, however, I am most interested in how it detects and removes malware from my computer.

I decided to give PC Matic’s scan another go. The second scan was completed in 3 minutes, but it included malware scanning.

It was interesting to note that PC Matic discovered one virus on my computer — LavasoftWeb Companion. This is a potentially unwanted application (PUA), that is often installed on devices with other software. It’s not something I remember installing, so PC Matic was able to catch it.

Lavasoft Web Companion, however, is not a malicious program, despite how annoying it might be to find out that you accidentally installed an app. It is not a virus, and PC Matic shouldn’t categorize it that way. This could confuse some users.

PC Matic also offers a simple-to use scan scheduler. After the system checks are complete, you can schedule scans for any device that is wp-signup.phped under your account.

You can schedule a scan of all your devices by simply setting a date and time, and then going through the default options to determine if you want to make any adjustments. You can schedule a complete scan, or deactivate automatic driver updates. You can also opt to receive your scan results via email. This is very useful since I often run scans on my own computer while running errands.

Overall, PC Matic’s scans are good. It was very simple to scan my computer, schedule individual and group scans, and it was easy for me to do so. Although its whitelisting strategy works well, I would like to see PC Matic use more advanced malware-fighting technology like McAfee and Norton.

PC Matic Report & Cleanup

PC Matic will scan your computer and provide a detailed report in color with explanations and recommendations.

This report is full of information and I felt overwhelmed. I was able to understand every color by carefully reading the instructions. Red is for immediate action, gray for skipped scans and dark blue for non-essential tweaks. However, the report could be clearer and more easily understood.

After I had reviewed my report, I began to correct the problems that PC Matic had found. I had the option of fixing all the issues or just a few.

Although it is recommended to fix all issues detected, I had to deactivate disk defragmentation because I have an SSD drive. Experts advise SSD disk users not to use defragmentation. PC Matic offered this option to me, which surprised me because it detected that my SSD disk was present during the scan. I liked that I could choose to disable this option.

PC Matic solved all issues within a matter of minutes. It suggested that I restart my computer and run another scan to ensure there weren’t any more issues. PC Matic found no new problems after I followed the instructions.

While I appreciate the detail in PC Matic’s reports, I feel it could be simpler to understand and more easily organized. I also like the fact that you can choose to fix just a few problems or all of them.

SuperShield

PC Matic provides real-time malware protection in a different way. However, PC Matic also offers SuperShield which must be downloaded separately.

SuperShield uses PC Matic’s “global Whitelist” — all things PC Matic believes are legitimate — in order to detect and stop malware from infecting devices.

SuperShield can be turned on at the end or later in PC Matic’s setup process. You can’t use SuperShield unless you run at least one system scan.

Check your system tray to make sure SuperShield runs on your computer. You are protected if the SuperShield icon turns green. SuperShield updates if the icon is yellow. If it’s not, SuperShield doesn’t work.

SuperShield was easy to use. My dashboard allowed me to access the SuperShield report, which displayed all apps and programs that were currently running on my device. If a program is a good one, it will have a green circle. Unknown programs are indicated by yellow circles, while malicious or unknown programs were blocked by red circles.

SuperShield was unable to detect malware so I ran some ransomware tests to test it. SuperShield immediately blocked the ransomware simulation once I had downloaded it. The ransomware simulator was whitelisted and I ran it on my phone. SuperShield refused to let it run, which is amazing!

I also put other malware on my PC, including viruses and trojans, and SuperShield blocked every one. SuperShield is a good program that prevents malware from getting into your system.

During my tests, SuperShield also blocked legitimate applications. I was able to whitelist programs I trusted were safe.

Manually whitelisting programs should only be done if you are 100% sure they are legitimate. Unknown programs automatically get sent to the PC Matic team to be checked. It takes them a few hours to do so. If you aren’t sure if a program is blocked, wait for the PC Matic to inspect it and decide if it’s safe or not.

It seems strange that real-time protection can be optional. SuperShield was easy to use and prevented any malware from running on my device. It did prevent safe and unknown programs from running on my device, which was a little annoying. The PC Matic team can quickly analyze unknown programs and you can manually whitelist those programs that you are certain are safe.

Although it isn’t my favourite real-time malware protection tool, Norton’s is far better.

Whitelisting

PCMatic blocks unknown programs, regardless of their malicious intent. However, you can whitelist programs that you are confident about.

You can whitelist a program that PC Matic has blocked during a system scan from the dashboard. PC Matic displays a list of all blocked programs. All you need to do is to check the box next to the program that you wish to unblock.

You can restore files that PC Matic has flagged as unsafe, but still wish to use them. You can restore a file that PC Matic flagged as unsafe by opening the Options tab.

But, it got complicated when I tried to whitelist a program SuperShield had blocked. I had to:

• Click on the SuperShield icon from the system tray.
• Hover over Protection Level > Block Notification Method.
• Select Prompt to Override (advanced).
• Open the program you wish to whitelist.
• A window opened and I chose Always Allow.

After I whitelisted the program, SuperShield required me to reset its settings to their default Display Only — Recommended in order to stop it from whitelisting ALL other blocked programs — even dangerous malware.

It’s easy to whitelist programs that have been blocked by a system scan. However, I would like to see a simpler way to whitelist programs within SuperShield. It’s great that users don’t need to wait for PC Matic, to whitelist legitimate programs. Just remember to set SuperShield to default after you have finished manually whitelisting program!

Pricing and plans for PC Matic

PC Matic’s Home Security plan offers the lowest price for antivirus software on the market. It’s also a good option if you don’t require a lot more internet security features. PC Matic offers lifetime and yearly options for the Home Security plan.

You can also get unlimited technical support for your device if you are based in the US with the Support Unlimited program. However, it is quite expensive.

PC Matic does not offer a free plan, as opposed to brands like Panda and Avira.

Setting up PC Matic was easy. Once I purchased PC Matic Security, I received a redirection to the Getting started page. Before installing the software, I was able to view tutorials, howto-videos and FAQs.

The mobile app for PC Matic is only available on Android. All I had to do was download the app from Google Play Store, and log in to my PC Matic account.

The app was very basic to me. There were two options available to me:

1. All of my applications can be scanned
2. Scanning all my files

Both scans took less than 10 seconds to complete. The report did not include information about how many files and applications were scanned, nor how many infections were found.

The app’s menu was located in the upper right corner. The menu allowed me to access the app’s settings and scan history. I also had the option of accessing the web portal and files that could not be deleted.

In the app’s settings I can choose to view whitelisted apps or to schedule scans. You can also choose to only update the software when you are connected to Wi-Fi.

The app is not very feature-rich but it works well. I prefer Avira and Norton. Despite this, I found PC Matic mobile easy to use and understand. It was also very easy to schedule scans and perform them.

The Matic does not offer phone support or live chat with a human, but they do have an email chat bot, live chatbot, and a range of tutorials for users.

The chatbot is not useful for more advanced questions regarding PC Matic such as how to add it to new devices or renew your license.

Advanced questions can be sent to PC Matic’s technical assistance team. I sent an email asking for help via the official website. They replied to my question within a few hours. In less than 30 minutes, I got an answer!

I was truly impressed by PC Matic’s customer service. The answer I received was very clear and easy to understand. A follow-up email was sent asking if the issue had been resolved.

Final Verdict: Does PC Matic Really Work?

PC Matic is an acceptable antivirus program. The whitelist-based malware scanner performed well during my tests. I was also able to block all the malware that I attempted to execute with its real-time scanner.

PC Matic stopped a lot legitimate programs during my tests simply because they weren’t on the PC Matic whitelist. But that’s okay. It’s better to have a few false positives than one false negative. PC Matic’s handling of unknown programs is not something I like.

PC Matic also ran a scan of my computer to detect performance issues. All problems were quickly fixed. Although I love that the program optimizes your system, I wish it was easier to read and understand.

The mobile app by PC Matic is quite useful for those who don’t need to use advanced options. It’s not available for Android, however.

The official PC Matic website has many great resources. And the customer service team is very responsive to any questions. In less than 30 minutes, I received a response to my email. The answer was very detailed. There is no live chat or phone number, as there are with Norton and TotalAV antiviruses. Basic questions can be answered by the AI-powered chatbot.
