I have tested many of the most popular antiviruses, so it was surprising to see PC Protect making bold claims about high malware detection rates and a wide range of extra security features.

PC Protect is quite expensive, even for the most basic package. PC Protect was a costly option, so I wanted to find out if it is worth the cost.

I tried its malware protection, customer support, and internet security systems. I also used all its features to test if it could fully protect my devices against the latest cybersecurity threats.

Here are my findings.

Protection for your PC:

PC Protect is small and simple to use.

The interface is very intuitive and combines internet security, malware protection and device optimization tools in one simple-to-navigate screen.

How did security measures perform?

Antivirus Scanner

The antivirus scanner works well. However, unlike Avira , PC Protect doesn’t use cloud-based scanning in its malware detection protocol.

PC Protect was easy to use. There were immediate options for Quick Scan and System Scan. The scans took less than 90 minutes to complete, which is comparable to other antiviruses like McAfee and Norton.

The results of the scan were surprising. The scanning engine was able to detect 99 out of 105 malware samples that were found on my computer, which is a 95% detection rate. Since PC Protect isn’t the most popular antivirus, I didn’t expect it to score so high on my malware test.

I went further with my testing and launched 8 ransomware file , which included the WannaCry virus, which encrypts your data and forces users to pay a large ransom. It missed the active keylogger emulator. This means hackers could still track my keystrokes if there was keylogger malware.

The custom scan option was a little confusing compared to other antiviruses’ customized scans. If I could drag and drop files or folders to be scanned with PC Protect, I would prefer it. It was also impossible to right-click on a file to select scan — something that most antiviruses allowed me to do when I tested them.

Although the scans were quick, I was disappointed that PC Protection doesn’t include file cache. This marks files previously scanned as safe and speeds up subsequent scans. Intego (for Mac), and Norton both include file caching. This really speeds up the process and creates an efficient scanning engine.

Overall I am happy with PCprotect’s malwareprevention. It performed well against the most recent malware samples. It is a little disappointing that the program doesn’t include file caching or a right-click option to scan — both of which are important features, considering the price.

Internet Security

WebShield protects against phishing attacks and malicious websites using PC Protect. When the software is installed, it’s automatically activated.

It didn’t work the way I expected. However, it did block some malicious websites and phishing links on Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. however, it did not block most active phishing sites that I visited.

PC Protect offers a browser extension that works with Chrome, Firefox and Edge. This browser extension was able to block phishing websites much more effectively. It didn’t work as expected. The extension was supposed to show safe and malicious sites in search results. However, it rarely did. The green tick that should appear alongside safe websites didn’t appear.

My mixed results suggest that I don’t trust PC Protect 100% to protect me from malicious websites. I would rather trust Norton’s internet security tools.

System Tuneup

PC Protect’s system optimization tools were generally a great experience. They were easy to use and set up.

There are five device optimization tools:

• Junk file cleaner.
• Remove duplicate files.
• Software uninstaller
• Manager of a startup program.
• Web browser cleaner.

All features ran a quick scan of my computer to find junk files, startup programs, and browser data that could be slowing my PC down. A junk file scan revealed that there were approximately 3 GB of files on my hard drive. It was easy to get rid of them.

The software uninstaller seemed a little useless to me. It ran a scan of my computer and displayed a list with programs including Chrome and Microsoft essential components. I was then able to remove them. Although I prefer to use Windows Control Panel to uninstall software, I can see how PC Protect could be helpful if there was a lot of junk software on my computer.

In general, I like PC Protect’s device optimization tools. These tools are easy to use and can help you save lots of space on your hard drive. These tools are expensive, and I expected more. PC Protect would not be my first choice for antivirus. I have found that Avira and Norton offer more advanced tools to optimize my devices. PC Protect may be the right choice for you, if you are looking for an easy-to use but reliable antivirus that doesn’t have a lot of extra features.

VPN (Virtual Private Network).

PC Protect’s VPN was tested for speed, privacy and server location.

Although it was quite fast, it was not the fastest VPN I tested. It averaged speeds between 10 and 15 Mbps. It is good enough to do basic browsing, online shopping and watching a few YouTube videos. It was not reliable enough to stream an entire HD movie without freezing when I tried it with Netflix and Hulu.

There are only 36 server locations. This number is not as high as the server locations for VPNs with antiviruses like Norton’s Secure VPN, which has almost 50 locations.

It does provide unlimited browsing data. This is what I would expect from a premium VPN. PC Protect’s logging policy is unclear. I asked customer service about this and they said that they don’t store VPN browsing data, but that their privacy policy suggests that they may share it with third-parties “if necessary”.

Although the VPN works well, their privacy policies are a little unclear. Although the VPN speeds were good, the extra cost for VPN is quite shocking.

Additional Features

PC Protect offers a few additional features, such as:

• Password manager.
• Checker for identity theft.
• Ad blocking.

A password manager is really nothing special.

It saves passwords locally, rather than using a cloud-based service — great for those who don’t want their data stored online but not for those who want to sync passwords across devices. I was able to import passwords from browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

PC Protect offers a browser extension that allows you to create passwords and sync them across multiple devices.

Ad Block Pro is a decent ad blocking tool. It is absurd that it comes with an extra cost. Avira’s Safe Shopping is a free ad-blocker that does more than blocking ads. It tracks links and blocks them. Also, it finds the best prices for products online.

Data Breach Check was able to find out that one of my online accounts had been hacked. It was strange how I was immediately redirected to PC Protect to see the results. The result didn’t appear within the app. This feature is not exceptional. Norton 360 Deluxe includes more advanced identity protection tools that continuously monitor your online accounts, credit scores, and other financial information to detect signs of identity theft.

PC Protect’s security features work well overall. The device optimization tools and malware protection are good. But I expected more from an antivirus that came with a high price tag. Although I am aware that there are better antiviruses out there, such as Avira and Norton, it may be worth considering if you only need an easy-to-use antivirus with device optimization tools.

Pricing and PC Protect Plans:

PC Protect is more expensive than other brands such as Norton and Avira, which offer more for a lower price. PC Protect charges extra for all add-ons. The Ad Block Pro is an example of an add-on that PC Protect charges extra for, even though it offers decent ad blocking tools free.

PC Protect does not offer a free trial, which is disappointing. To be fair, PC Protect offers substantial discounts for the first year and a 30-day money-back guarantee. This allows you to try the product risk-free. The standard price, which you will pay to renew your subscription, is quite high and not the most value for money.

PC Protect’smalware scan and web protection tools are included in the free version. However, real-time protection is not available. Premium users will need to purchase the premium version to use these tools fully.

The Essential Antiviruspackage, like all PC Protect packages is very expensive. It can only be used once. Although they offer a great first-year discount, the renewal cost is very high.

McAfee or Norton plans offer more security features for a lower price than PC Protect’s one-device plan.

Mid-Tier Plan: Pro Antivirus

PC Protect claims that the Pro Antiviruspackage contains the password vault, but it does not. The password vault must be purchased separately on the PC Protect online marketplace.

This package covers 3 devices and is identical to theEssentialplan.

The regular price for this package is very high. Their website also misleads users about the features included. Norton 360 Deluxe covers 5 devices at a fraction of the price and offers a wide range of features, including a password manager.

Antivirus Plan with the Most Advanced Features

This package includes the exact same features as the others but also 24/7 customer support. This would be helpful for beginners who need help with particular features.

TheUltimate Antiviruspackage covers five devices,but I still think that the regular price is too steep. I’d rather have Norton, McAfee, and Avira as my antivirus than McAfee, which all offer a lot more features at a fraction of the price.

PC Protect is overall too expensive. It is absurd that you must pay extra for Ad Block Pro — PC Protect should have this included in all packages. It does come with a great antivirus and some useful optimization tools. For beginners looking for reliable, easy-to-use protection against malware, there are discounts for the first year and a 30-day guarantee.

PC Protection Ease-of-use and Setup

PC Protect takes just 5 minutes to download and install. It was the same for their browser extension. It was very easy to install on my Chrome browser.

The malware scanner is easy to use. There are three options: Quick Scan (Custom Scan), and System Scan (System Scan). Although the custom scan was not very intuitive and a little difficult to perform, both Quick Scan (and System Scan) were extremely easy to use. It took the malware scanner less than 90 minutes to run an entire system scan. This is quite fast for antiviruses.

The device optimization tools, including junk file cleaners and startup program managers, were all easy to use.

The VPN was also easy to use, even for beginners. It’s not recommended for streaming HD content but it is good for browsing the internet and shopping online.

The real problem was when I tried accessing PC Protect’s online marketplace. This is where you can buy add-ons like Ad Block Pro and VPN. After I bought the Ad Block Pro, the online marketplace was not accessible to me. I couldn’t view or download any other products. I reached out to customer service about the issue. However, as you will see, their experience was not positive. My issue has not been resolved.

Easy to use, the malware scanner and device optimization tools. It was easy to set-up and offered good speeds for browsing the internet and shopping online. The integrated online marketplace of PC Protect was slow and the customer service team didn’t seem to know how to fix it.

PC Protect’s software is simple to install, configure, and use.

PC Protect Mobile App:

PC Protect offers both an Android app and an iOS version. My girlfriend tested the Android version of PC Protect on her Galaxy 10 and I tested it on my iPhone X.

My girlfriend mentioned that she loved how simple it was to use PC Protect’s Android App, which includes:

• Real-time virus protection.
• Optimize your device with these tools
• VPN.

It was easy to use the malware scanner and device optimization software. Although she admitted that the VPN wasn’t visible, she eventually found it after contacting customer service.

PC Protect’s iOS App was tested by me. It is basically a VPN, with three features: a battery monitor and an incognito browser.

The iOS app is a well-designed product. The display is attractive and it’s easy to use. It lacks Wi-Fi protection, password management and anti-theft tools like I expect to find in iOS antivirus apps.

Both apps are good overall. Both the Android and iOS versions offer a greater range of features than the iOS. While they are both useful, I prefer Norton for Android over McAfee iOS.

Support for PC Protect customers:

PC Protect is the anti-virus suite with the worst customer service. Apart from a decent FAQ page, the overall customer service experience was very poor. They are rude and clueless. One live chat representative is a saving grace. However, this was not my experience.

There are many support options available for them:

• Chat live
• Email support.
• Telephone support (billing only)
• Knowledge base (FAQ).

My first attempt to reach a live chat representative resulted in a poor attitude. However, it wasn’t a bad experience. There is clearly a virus epidemic in their customer service offices. Symptoms include complete delusion and an indifferent attitude towards customers.

I tried to use the live chat feature, but was stopped about 30 times. They claimed I wasn’t premium, even though I had most of the questions that would apply to those who were buying the product. After I explained that I was going to buy a package, they refused to answer any of my questions. One representative closed the chat 5 times.

You are also required to provide all your personal information, including address, ZIP code and phone number before you can start the chat. PC Protect does not need this information to answer simple questions about their product.

Even though I received a response a few times, it was completely ineffective. The representatives seemed to be obsessed with pre-written responses, which left me totally dissatisfied.

I tried both the email and phone support. Both had the same unhelpful and clueless agents as the live chat agents.

It was PC Protect’s support staff’s inability to train well enough or caring enough about customers that I attributed it to — something PC Protect must address, as they could lose many customers if they do not improve their attitude.

I found the knowledge base (FAQ), decent but lacking essential information. I had to contact customer service for all the information I needed.

I would recommend that you consider switching to other antiviruses after having a bad experience with PC Protect’s support team. You may not consider customer support as important to you, but you can still use PC Protect’s malware protection and user-friendly software.

Is PC Protect worth the price?

PC Protect’s packages don’t seem to be worth the price. Although they offer a good discount for the first year, the renewal price is quite high. This is due to the fact that it doesn’t have many features and add-ons like the password vault or ad blocking.

If you are willing to pay a premium for malware security and want an intuitive interface with device optimization tools, PC Protect might be the right choice. Take advantage of their first year discounts.

It has a high detection rate which means that you can trust it to protect your computer from ransomware and malware. The majority of the extra features are also easy to use.

However, based on my experience with their customer service team and the high cost of their packages I would not choose PC Protect. Having access to a responsive support option is very important for me.

Avira Prime or Norton 360 Deluxe will give you more protection and value. PC Protect can be tried risk-free with their 30-day money back guarantee. You can also request a refund if the antivirus is not right for you.
