Zemana Antivirus Review 2022 – Not a Great Bargain

Zemana comes from a Turkish antivirus maker and offers a basic anti-virus tool to Android. Although the user interface may not be intimidating it isn’t very effective in protecting Android smartphones from cybersecurity threats.

Security

Zemana offers two modes for an antivirus scanner: quick scan and complete scan. The scans looked through a list “objects” on my phone. This was even when I used the full scan setting. There was no difference in the speed of the scans. A test APK file I had in my downloads folder did not prompt me to notify, but a trojan program did.

In general, virus scanners must scan the entire file system. It is impossible to detect malicious downloads and executable files that trick users into installing them by scanning only the applications that are already installed. The program’s support page states that it scans “all files on the SD card and internal storage.” However, this does not seem to be true.

The program received complimentary ratings from testing labs despite its limited virus scanning capabilities. The program works quickly and efficiently. Although it did not leave any reports about the results, the scan was completed in less than three minutes. It protects against all types of malware, including trojans, spyware, and traditional forms.

I could toggle whether I wanted the scanner to use mobile data, or only when I was connected to a WLAN network. The scanner could also be instructed to check pre-installed applications. However, this setting was disabled by default.

Zemana has real time protection. This means that scans are automatically initiated and run according to a set schedule. The background process runs and Zemana generates a notification that displays the current system status.

Potentially Unwanted App (PUA) Detection

PUAs are often unwanted programs that users inadvertently download by clicking on misleading download links or adding components of apps they already own. They often inject malware that can slow down and attack users’ systems. Zemana provides a complete list of PUAs, and the detection engine will notify users if they are detected.

This was done by installing SMSreg, a PUA sometimes bundled with untrustworthy battery optimization apps. I received an immediate prompt to remove it.

Anti-Keylogger Protection

Many Android keyloggers can record every keystroke of users. The mSpy remote device monitor suite was installed to my Android. I received an alert that the program was in progress. This protection is essential for anyone who is concerned about digital eavesdropping and invasive monitoring.

Use it quickly

Zemana is simple to install and navigate. Although unlocking the premium trial required going to Google Play Store and opening an account, most users will be comfortable doing that.

Support

It took me some time to find the way to access the support function in the app. Click “About” under the “Settings” menu. Clicking “personal assistance” sends an email the technical support team. They are available 24/7. My ticket was answered within two hours. This is an excellent response time. There is a small online knowledge base that answers user questions. The support provided was satisfactory. However, a few additional features (in-app knowledge bases, live chat) would have been greatly appreciated.

Pricing

Zemana Security subscriptions can be purchased directly within the app. The company also offers a free 15-day trial for users who wish to test the product before purchasing. The subscription management and billing can be done directly from Google Play Store. Users can cancel the trial at anytime. Although the app does not offer a lot of functionality, the monthly and annual subscriptions are reasonable.
