VyprVPN works well for streaming. In my tests it worked with streaming sites like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. However, it was unable to access Disney+. VyprVPN supports torrenting on all its servers. This makes it a great choice to bypass internet firewalls in countries like China.

While I enjoy many aspects of VyprVPN’s service, it doesn’t offer the best security features. Split-tunneling can only be used on Android and macOS, and there is no ad blocking. VyprVPN does not block malicious websites, however it only works with Android 7.0 and macOS. Some of VyprVPN’s live chat support representatives didn’t answer my questions or were not responsive enough.

VyprVPN was one of my top VPN providers. I tested it for a couple weeks.

VyprVPN is a privacy-focused VPN that has earned a reputation for being highly secure. It offers high-privacy features such as a no-logs policy and kill switch. A proprietary protocol that bypasses internetcensorship and hides VPN usage from third-parties is also available. VyprVPN’s headquarters are in Switzerland, where there are some of the most stringent privacy laws anywhere.

VyprVPN offers excellent security and privacy features. It also has user-friendly apps and great streaming and torrenting support. However, it is quite expensive.

VyprVPN Features

These are the essential VPN security features of VyprVPN:

• AES encryption of 256 bits VyprVPN provides end-to-end encryption for your data that is also used by military and banks.
• No logs policy. VyprVPN published 2018 results of an independent audit which confirmed policy.
• The kill switch. This feature prevents your internet access from being interrupted by a VPN.

ExpressVPN and other VPN providers have basic kill switches you can enable or disable. VyprVPN allows you to configure the kill switch so that it remains active even after you close the VyprVPN application. This prevents you going online without connecting to the VPN. VyprVPN has a kill switch that is available on Android, Windows and macOS. You can also enable your iOS device’s ability to reconnect to the VPN automatically if your connection drops.

VyprVPN has 4 protocols: OpenVPN (only UDP), IKEv2/IPSec and WireGuard. However, IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN are both very secure and speedy. My favorite protocol is WireGuard because it offers the fastest speeds. Chameleon may not be as fast as WireGuard or OpenVPN because it uses additional layers of encryption. I recommend Chameleon only for bypassing firewalls and overcoming VPN blockers.

VyprVPN has perfect forward secrecy which changes the encryption keys regularly that encrypt or decrypt your traffic. Even if hackers steal the encryption key generated recently, they can only view data from the current session and not any previous or future sessions.

VyprVPN provides strong DNS leak protection via its encrypted DNS servers (VyprDNS), however, I’m disappointed that VyprVPN does not include IPv6 or WebRTC protection.

VyprVPN supports The Onion Router, (Tor), on all its servers. VyprVPN protects you IP address when accessing the Tor browser. For example, if your Internet Protocol (IP) is accidentally lost while browsing the Tor network’s Tor network, VyprVPN will be exposed and not your personal IP. VyprVPN offers good Tor support. However, ProtonVPN is more suitable for browsing Tor. ProtonVPN allows Tor sites to be accessed in regular browsers such as Firefox and Chrome.

VyprVPN has a Block Malicious Sites option that blocks connections to websites suspected to be hosting malware. However, this feature is not available on macOS or Android 7.0. Private Internet Access’s Malicious Sites tool and ProtonVPN’s NetShield feature are good options if you want a VPN with good malware and ad blocking.

VyprVPN offers more than just these features. They also offer split-tunneling and obfuscation.

Obfuscation

VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol bypasses internet censorship in restrictive countries like China.

VyprVPN refreshes Chameleon’s IP address several times per session. This ensures that you don’t lose your internet connection. VyprVPN will assign you another IP address if an IP address is blocked.

Chameleon can slow down your internet speed due to an additional layer of encryption (the “obfuscation” layer). My download speeds were 55% faster with Chameleon than with WireGuard.

VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol is a great feature. Chameleon allows you to bypass VPN block and censorship by obfuscating VPN traffic.

Split-Tunneling

VyprVPN offers a split-tunneling feature called “Connection Per App”. You can choose which traffic goes through the VPN server, and which through your local ISP network.

Connection Per App performed as advertised I used VyprVPN to route my torrent traffic and then streamed Netflix content through my local network. VyprVPN’s split tunneling feature allowed me to download torrents at a speed that was fast enough for me to simultaneously stream TV shows and movies in HD.

VyprVPN’s split tunnelling is not available on iOS or Android. Split-tunneling is not an option for most VPNs, but many of the top VPNs, such as ExpressVPN and ProtonVPN offer it on Windows. I would love to see VyprVPN include split-tunneling in its Windows app.

Please note that VyprVPN does not allow you to split-tunnel traffic.Unlike ProtonVPN, which allows you to route IP addresses through the local network, this is extremely useful for accessing sites that block VPNs, such as streaming services, banks, and government websites. ProtonVPN allows you to route a browser such as Chrome through your local network, which can help you get faster browser speeds.

VyprVPN is good for split-tunneling, both on Android and macOS. However, the Windows app does not have this feature. It is simple to use Connection Per App. I tested it and found no bugs.

VyprVPN Privacy & Security

VyprVPN follows a transparent policy of no logs.

It does not track your IP address, files downloaded, or what websites you visit. VyprVPN stores your email address and payment information to communicate with you. However, I find it strange that VyprVPN asks for your full names when you sign up (unlike many VPNs). VyprVPN cannot verify my full name so I created a fake name. It worked but I would like VyprVPN not to add this step to the purchase process.

VyprVPN used keep logs for users’ IP addresses up to 30 days. However, it now has a strict no logs policy. This was independently audited in 2018 and confirmed.

VyprVPN’s headquarters is in Switzerland. It is not part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances, a group of countries which share surveillance data. Switzerland has strong privacy laws. For example, IP addresses are personal data and it is against the law to track users online without their consent. The country does not have mandatory data retention laws.

VyprVPN’s no-logs policy has been well audited. However, I do not like the fact that VyprVPN requires that you provide your full name when purchasing. VyprVPN’s headquarters is in a country that has strict data privacy laws.

VyprVPN Speed & Performance

Each of the 60+ countries that VyprVPN has servers, I conducted a speed test. Average speed drop was 79%. However, I live in Romania which has very fast internet speeds so the speed decrease didn’t affect my streaming, torrenting, and browsing experience. A speed test was also performed by a colleague from the US to gain a better understanding of VyprVPN speeds. On average, he saw a 21% decrease in speed.

To get a baseline view of my speed, I did a speed test that was connected to my ISP’s internet network.

Next, I used VyprVPN’s Fastest Server This tool connects you to fastest servers based on where you are located. I was connected to a server from Romania. My internet browsing was smooth despite the 73% slowdown in download speed. Netflix HD videos loaded immediately and there was no buffering when I watched movies or TV shows. I was also able to download large files quickly.

I then connected to a server in the US. My speeds were 83% slower, but websites loaded almost instantly and videos started right away in HD on my PS4 (but there was minor buffering). I was even able to play online games without much lag, and my Voice over IP (VoIP) calls didn’t freeze or disconnect.

Finally, I was able to connect to a server in Japan. My connection speed dropped by 96%. 1080p videos took between 5-10 seconds to load. They were difficult to view due to constant buffering and freezing of my VoIP call. However, I still had fast torrenting speeds. It took me about the same time to download large files as when connected to a Romanian Server.

Because Romania has very fast internet speeds, it’s not fair to compare my results to what people from other countries might experience. So I asked my colleague in the US to do some speed tests, too.

To establish a baseline speed, he first ran a speed test with his ISP network.

He then used VyprVPN’s Fastest Server to connect to a New York server. Although he experienced a 11% decrease in speed, it did not affect streaming, gaming, browsing or streaming. My colleague had a lot of freezing during Zoom calls.

My colleague connected to a Danish server, and his speed dropped by 19%. He was still able watch HD videos without buffering and in HD. His Zoom call was seamless and websites loaded instantly. There were no call drops or glitches unlike when he connected to a VPN server in the US.

Finally, my colleague connected to a distant server in Australia. His speed decreased by 25%, and my colleague reported that websites took about 2 seconds to load, and streaming content started after only a few seconds as well. Even large torrent files were quick to download!

Overall, my colleague and I had really good speeds while connected to servers in our own countries and even on servers in the US and Europe. My torrenting speeds were lightning fast, HD videos and websites loaded almost immediately, and I was capable of making stable VoIP calls. Although I experienced slowdowns using Asian servers, my colleague only experienced minor delays streaming or VoIP calls when connecting to distant servers.

VyprVPN Servers and IP Addresses

VyprVPN offers 700+ servers across 60+ countries.

VyprVPN’s servers network is smaller than those of ExpressVPN (3000+ servers in 94 nations) and CyberGhost VPN (7400+ servers across 90+ countries). VyprVPN servers are spread evenly across Europe, North America and Central America. They also have servers in the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. This makes it easy to locate a server with fast speeds.

VyprVPN offers dynamic server switching If a server is offline or overcrowded, VyprVPN will connect you to another server in the same cluster of servers in the country. This allows you to maintain stable connections and high speeds.

Although VyprVPN does not display server load percentage (how many active users connect to a particular server), it is an excellent alternative to this. The dynamic server switching tool is also useful. VyprVPN also displays the ping, which is the time it takes for a signal to reach the VPN server from your device. This can help you choose a fast server.

I also love how VyprVPN allows you to torrent on its 700+ servers. This could be a problem if you don’t have a server nearby to get the fastest speeds.

VyprVPN does not offer dedicated IP addresses. These are addresses that you only have access to. Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN offer dedicated IPs for an additional fee. PrivateVPN also offers a free dedicated IP.

VyprVPN is a solid server network. There are servers in over 60 countries. I love VyprVPN’s server technology, which ensures that you connect to a server that has enough bandwidth. VyprVPN also allows torrenting from all its servers, which I find great.

VyprVPN Torrenting & Streaming

VyprVPN claims that it works with 45+ streaming service providers.

VyprVPN was able to access Netflix and Amazon Prime in my tests. However, it could not access Disney+. It also worked well with less-known streaming apps such as Crunchyroll, ITV and DAZN. My colleagues in the UK and the US confirmed that VyprVPN works well with Hulu as well as BBC iPlayer.

To make sure VyprVPN wasn’t leaking my IP address, I ran leak tests in more than 10 locations before I downloaded torrents. All of the leak tests returned zero.

There are two options: a 12-month or 1-month plan. The 12-month plan is D190,340 per month, while the 1-month plan is nearly twice that amount. This is very high for a monthly plan. VyprVPN has many great features. However, there are better VPNs with cheaper plans like TunnelBear, CyberGhost VPN and Private Internet Access.

VyprVPN plans allow for up to 30 simultaneous connections I’m not sure why VyprVPN does not offer unlimited connections like IPVanish or CactusVPN.

VyprVPN allows you to pay with 5 credit cards or PayPal. However, I am disappointed that they don’t support cryptocurrency payments. PrivateVPN, CyberGhost VPN and ExpressVPN allow you to pay with cryptocurrency.

VyprVPN is easy to use: Desktop and Mobile Apps

VyprVPN offers apps for iOS and Android.

Installing VyprVPN apps is very simple. I was able to install VyprVPN’s mobile apps on my Android smartphone, iPad, and Windows 10 laptop in a matter of minutes. The desktop app took about 1-2 minutes.

Android

VyprVPN’s Android app is easy to use and feature-rich.

VyprVPN’s intuitive interface is very appealing. It has only three tabs: Customize and Connection.

The Fastest Server tool is located under Connection. You can manually search for a place by clicking on either the Fastest server box, or the servers tab. Both will bring up a list. VyprVPN colors the ping green (for good), yellow(average), or red (bad). VyprVPN allows you to sort servers by country, region and speed.

You can activate Public Wi-Fi Protection and Connection Per App (split tunnelling), the kill switch, VyprDNS, or manually select your protocol under the Customizetab. VyprVPN’s Android application includes WireGuard and OpenVPN.

The Public Wi-Fi Protection feature is something I love. It allows you to set up the app to connect to a VPN server every time you connect to untrusted networks. However, the Block Malicious Sites function on my Android smartphone is not available for Android 7 or lower.

Overall, I love VyprVPN’s Android app – it has great security features, is user-friendly and has some really cool features.

iOS

VyprVPN’s iOS app is not as good as the Android app

The iOS app is similar to the Android app in design, but does not have a kill button (although there’s an Automatic Reconnect feature that will protect you from traffic leaks). Private Internet Access is recommended if you need an iOS app that has a solid kill switch.

Split-tunneling is not available in VyprVPN iOS app, but I don’t know of any VPN with split-tunneling on iOS.

The iOS app includes IKEv2/IPSec, OpenVPN and Chameleon. WireGuard is available only on iOS 12 or higher.

VyprVPN iOS app is good. It’s user-friendly, secure, and fast, but the Android version has more features.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

VyprVPN’s Windows app and macOS app have almost identical interfaces to the mobile apps. They are simple to use and offer good features. I prefer VyprVPN’s macOS app to the Windows app – the macOS has split-tunneling as well as the Block Malicious Sites function (I wish Windows had both).

Both apps include Public Wi-Fi Protection and VyprDNS. They also offer connection options and a variety of protocols (OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec.

VyprVPN’s Windows app and macOS app are both pretty good. However, the macOS app is better as it offers split-tunneling, and allows you to prevent malicious sites from loading.

VyprVPN Apps: VyprVPN is Easy to Use

The apps all share a common design and are easy to use.

While the Android and macOS apps offer the most features (kill switch and split-tunneling), the Windows and iOS apps provide many more convenient features as well as fast protocols and secure protocols.

Support for VyprVPN customers

VyprVPN offers a comprehensive library of support guides, frequently asked questions (FAQs), as well as 24/7 live chat support and email support.

The support guides are extremely detailed. I didn’t even have to contact live chat support. I found the majority of the information I needed in the FAQs, troubleshooting articles and the handy search tool. VyprVPN supports content in four languages: English, French and Spanish.

However, I would like to see step-by-step instructions for downloading and installing VyprVPN apps. This is similar to what many VPNs offer like TunnelBear, CyberGhost VPN and ProtonVPN. ExpressVPN also offers video tutorials.

However, support representatives can use a translation tool in order to communicate in your language. I was connected to a live support rep within a matter of seconds. The longest time I waited was approximately one minute. VyprVPN support reps were generally helpful. However, some reps weren’t quick to respond or were not very knowledgeable about VyprVPN features. I had to wait for 10 minutes before one rep answered my question. When he did reply, he gave incorrect information.

VyprVPN also received a few emails from me. I received a response within 1-2 hours. This is faster than most VPNs which reply within 5-6 hours.
