To compare ZenMate VPN with other top VPNs, I spent several weeks researching and testing it. ZenMate VPN is great for torrenting and streaming.

ZenMate can access over 30+ streaming sites through dedicated streaming servers located in more than 10+ countries. It also works with Netflix and other top-rated sites such as Netflix. It also has P2P servers available in 50+ countries and offers fast download speeds.

While I don’t like the fact that ZenMate VPN has split-tunneling or malware blocking in its browser extensions is something I dislike, it offers excellent security features, unlimited connections and fast speeds on all servers.

ZenMate VPN Features

ZenMate VPN offers the following industry-standard security features

• 256 bit AES encryption — ZenMate VPN secures your data using military-grade encryption.
• No logs policy ZenMate VPN does not log your IP address or internet traffic (sites visited and files downloaded).

ZenMate includes OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec. WireGuard is only available on ZenMate’s Android app. Top competitors such as Private Internet Access or ProtonVPN offer WireGuard in all their apps. ZenMate VPN should add WireGuard in its future apps.

ZenMate offers full protection against IPv6 leaks, DNS leaks, and WebRTC leaks. VyprVPN and other top VPNs don’t offer IPv6 protection so you will need to disable them manually. I did leak tests on more than 10 servers, and found no leaks.

I love that ZenMate offers advanced security features such as perfect forward secrecy, RAM-only servers, and RAM-only server. This changes your session’s encryption key so hackers can’t access past sessions or future sessions. The RAM-only servers don’t store any data and every server reset wipes out all data.

ZenMate VPN, along with CyberGhost VPN, ExpressVPN, is the only VPN on the market that offers encryption for browser extensions. ZenMate support representatives confirmed that browser extensions use 128 bit AES encryption which offers excellent security.

ZenMate VPN offers additional features such as split-tunneling and an automatic clearing of browsing history. However, these features can only be found on ZenMate’s browser extension and not on the apps. Many of my favourite VPNs, such as ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access and ProtonVPN, include all their features in their browser extensions and apps.

• Stealth connection. This feature clears all of your browsing history and cookies automatically when you disconnect ZenMate VPN. This feature is similar to the incognito option in browsers such as Chrome, Firefox Edge, Safari, Edge, and Safari. However, Stealth Connection is easier to use. I don’t have to open another window to access incognito mode to clear all my history. This feature was tested multiple times. It always cleared my internet history and deleted all cookies that could be used to protect my online privacy.
• Whitelist. This split-tunneling feature by Zenmate lets you choose which websites use VPN and which use your local network. Whitelist worked well for me. I was able exclude my bank from the VPN connection, which is a common problem with most banks. I also had the ability to access my favorite Netflix TV shows using the VPN. Split-tunneling is available in other VPNs. ProtonVPN, for example, allows you to split-tunnel apps and IPs. It also has split-tunneling on both the Windows and Android apps.
• Malware blocker. This feature prevents you from visiting malware sites. It worked with malware-hosting sites, which I tested. Other top VPNs, such as ProtonVPN or Private Internet Access, combine a malware blocking feature with an ad-blocker and offer better functionality. ProtonVPN’s NetShield feature speeds up web pages and is available on all ProtonVPN apps.

ZenMate VPN Privacy & Security

ZenMate VPN uses a no-logs policy. It doesn’t log IP addresses or traffic (the websites you visit and files downloaded). Only your email address is recorded, which is required to create an account. Although ZenMate’s privacy policy does not specify what data ZenMate apps log, customer service confirmed that they do not keep any logs.

ZenMate’s no logs policy, unlike VyprVPN and ExpressVPN has not been independently audited or verified. To provide more transparency and to prove it doesn’t store any user data, I would like ZenMate to conduct an independent audit on its no-logs policy.

ZenMate’s headquarters are in Germany, which is part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances. This group includes countries that share surveillance data. ZenMate doesn’t hold any user data so even if authorities requested it, ZenMate wouldn’t be able to provide it.

ZenMate VPN is located within a country of 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances, but it adheres to a strict no logs policy.

ZenMate VPN Speed & Performance

To determine my average VPN speed, I ran speed tests using my Windows PC on ZenMate VPN servers located in 80+ countries. I experienced the fastest speeds with local servers in the US and only minor slowdowns when using distant servers in Australia, India and Japan.

To get an idea of the speed of my internet service provider (ISP), I first ran a speed test with no VPN.

Next, I connected using ZenMate VPN’s quick-connect feature ( Best server location), which connects to the fastest server based upon your location. I am based in the US and ZenMate connected me to a New York server. These are my speeds

Next, I tried a long distance server in Japan. These are my speeds

ZenMate VPN was able to maintain high speeds for both distant and local servers.

Although I experienced 36% average slowdown when connecting to a local server I was able access websites instantly and play online games without lag.

My speeds dropped by 39% when I tried distant servers in Japan, Belgium and Japan. HD videos loaded in 5 seconds and there was minimal buffering when I skipped through them. I also had lightning fast torrenting speeds, downloading a file of 5 GB in under 10 minutes.

ZenMate VPN Servers & IP Addresses

ZenMate VPN boasts over 4,000 servers in more than 80 countries. Although some VPNs may have servers in more places (expressVPN and CyberGhost VPN both have servers located in 90+ countries, while HMA has servers located in 210+ countries), ZenMate VPN is able to locate servers anywhere in the world. This makes it easy to connect to a server and get fast speeds. Server overcrowding can lead to slowdowns due to the large number of servers.

I love that ZenMate shows the server load. This tells you how many active users are connected. The smaller the load, it is faster. In my tests, the server load was accurate. The servers with the lowest load provided me the fastest speeds. It’s great that servers can be ranked by their server load. This allows you to quickly find the server with the lowest load.

ZenMate offers dedicated torrenting servers in more than 50 countries. Although I could torrent on regular servers, they were slower than P2P servers.

ZenMate also offers dedicated streaming servers in more than 10 countries, which can be used with over 30 streaming services. They work well but I also tried regular servers in the same country and was able access the same sites. There was no incentive to use streaming servers.

ZenMate VPN offers a vast network of servers across many countries. It displays server load to help you locate fast servers. There are also dedicated streaming and P2P servers that work well.

ZenMate VPN Streaming & Torrenting

ZenMate VPN works well with streaming. It also works with streaming sites such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+. My colleague in the UK confirmed that it worked with BBC iPlayer. I was also able access to less-popular sites such as Crunchyroll, VRV and VRV.

ZenMate is not compatible with Hulu, unfortunately. ExpressVPN is our top-ranked streaming VPN. It claims to be able to access 65+ streaming sites and works consistently with Hulu.

ZenMate VPN allows you to torrent on servers in 50+ countries. It also works with popular P2P client applications (I had the fastest speeds using qBittorrent).

However, ExpressVPN is still my favorite torrenting VPN. It allows torrenting on all its 3,300+ servers and offers the fastest speeds. Private Internet Access supports P2P traffic across all servers. It also offers port forwarding, which allows you to connect to more peers for faster speeds.

ZenMate can be used for streaming and torrenting. Hulu is not supported. It also has dedicated torrenting servers, and can work with the top P2P applications.

Pricing and VPN plans for ZenMate

ZenMate VPN offers 2 tiers of subscription plans. Each plan has different features and a different length.

The Pro plan allows you to use ZenMate VPN’s browser extension, but not the native apps for Android iOS Windows and macOS. This is very inconvenient. The Proplan offers unlimited connections, streaming support and additional features such as Stealth Connection and Whitelister.

The Ultimate plan adds support for P2P and allows you to use both the desktop and mobile apps. However, it is very frustrating that the apps don’t have all the additional features.

ZenMate is $1.99 per month, which makes it one of the most affordable long-term plans available. However, I believe that top VPNs such as CyberGhost VPN and Private Internet Access offer better value.

ZenMate VPN supports PayPal and credit cards. Most VPNs accept cryptocurrency. All plans come with a 30-day guarantee.

ZenMate VPN Easy of Use: Mobile and Desktop Apps

ZenMate VPN offers apps for Android, iOS and macOS as well as browser extensions for Chrome and Edge. This is in contrast to the top VPNs that offer all their features in every app and on browser extensions.

The mobile apps are easy to use and intuitive. There’s a quick connect feature, and it’s simple to manually connect to a Server (especially with the search field). Only problem is that the mobile app doesn’t show the server load. Both Android and iOS users have better options.

Zenmate’s desktop applications are very user-friendly. The tabs on the left panel are very useful for different server categories such as favorites, all servers and torrenting servers. All settings are easy to understand, and have short definitions.

Overall, ZenMate’s browser extensions are not as feature-rich as its desktop and mobile apps. However, ZenMate VPN’s desktop and mobile apps are very easy to use.

ZenMate VPN Customer Support

ZenMate VPN offers decent customer support – it has responsive email support, live chat (but not 24/7), and a helpful support section.

Zenmate’s live chat was fast and easy to use. I was connected in less than 10 second intervals when I tried it. I received good and friendly answers from them. ZenMate VPN said that its live chat is open between 6am-10pm (German time), but sometimes I was unable to access it during these hours. CyberGhost VPN and ExpressVPN also offer 24/7 live chat.

ZenMate also offers email support. I received a response within 6-8 hours. That is quite decent. The representatives provided me with clear answers and I didn’t have to ask any additional questions.

ZenMate’s support section is great. It has helpful setup guides with screenshots, as well as troubleshooting guides. However, some frequently asked questions (FAQs), either didn’t have the right information or were out of date.

ZenMate VPN does not offer 24/7 live chat, and some FAQs can be inaccurate. However, support reps are quick to respond via email and live chat and offer helpful answers.

ZenMate is a poor VPN service. However, it does some things right. OpenVPN TCP version of ZenMate is optimized, the kill switch does not fail, torrenting and P2P connections are supported, and it has one of the lowest prices. The customer service is quick and helpful.
